Women's Volleyball Upsets Lynchburg In Quarterfinals

Box Score

(LYNCHBURG, Va.) – Randolph-Macon avenged one of its losses with a victory over Lynchburg in the quarterfinals of the ODAC women's volleyball tournament Wednesday evening. The sixth-seeded Yellow Jackets lost the third seeded Hornets in four sets earlier this month, but turned around to defeat the hosts in four this time.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 3, Lynchburg 1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16)

Venue: Turner Gymnasium

Records: R-MC 7-4, UL 9-7

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets came out on fire and never trailed through the first set. A kill by Grace Parker (So., Andover, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) helped spark a 5-1 run and give R-MC a 10-5 lead.
  • The Hornets cut the deficit to two at 13-11, but Randolph-Macon didn't take long to extend its lead again. Sydney Koch (Jr., Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson) started an 8-2 run to make the score 20-13 with a kill, one of six she had in the opening set.
  • After Lynchburg scored the next three points, the Jackets caught fire again and closed the game with five consecutive points on a kill by Jordan Davis-Allen (So., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan), an ace by Macguire Gubba (Jr., Grove City, Pa. / Grove City), and three more kills by Koch.
  • The second set saw Macon jump out to a 12-4 lead after a 7-0 run, but Lynchburg was able to answer with a 7-0 run of its own. Three consecutive points thanks to a Hornet error, a Parker kill, and an ace by Leslie Currie (Fr., Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) gave the Jackets a 23-21 lead, but the Hornets scored the next four to even the match.
  • Set Three saw the Yellow Jackets regroup and regain momentum to take a 2-1 lead in the match. They again jumped out to a big lead at 10-4, but this time they withstood the Hornets' comeback attempt.
  • A 9-2 run capped by a kill from Madison Warlick (Jr., Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) set the Jackets up with the chance to go back up. The Hornets scored the next three, but another kill from Warlick and a final spike by Megan Bost (Fr., Angier, N.C. / West Johnston) gave R-MC the win.
  • In the fourth set, the Jackets once again never trailed throughout. They were only tied up at 6-all and 8-all, but an 11-4 rally capped by an ace from Brooke Young (Fr., Saint Leonard, Md. / Calvert) made it 19-12 in favor of R-MC.
  • The next three points were scored by the Hornets, but the Jackets were quick to thwart the Hornets' hopes of tying the match with a pair of blocks. Davis-Allen and Bost rejected the first attempt while Davis-Allen and Warlick halted the second to make the score 21-15 and cause Lynchburg to call its final timeout.
  • After the break, kills by Warlick and Bost helped close out the set and give the Jackets a 3-1 win.

Inside The Numbers

  • Koch led a trio of Yellow Jackets in double figures in kills with 13. Davis-Allen chalked up 11 while Parker finished with 10.
  • Serving was a strong suit of the Jackets as well as they finished with 12 aces on the night. Five of them came in the first set alone. The dozen aces was a new season-best topping the previous mark set twice by two.
  • The defense was a well-oiled machine as a block party broke out. The Jackets matched their season best of 10 blocks, but did so in only four sets compared to the previous time which was in a five set win over Bridgewater.
  • Davis-Allen led the team with eight blocks on the night. It's the most by a Yellow Jackets player this season.
  • A quartet of Yellow Jackets reached double-figures digging up the Hornets' attacks. Leslie Currie hit 20 for the second time this season and was two shy of her season best. Warlick added 15, Mackenzie Loewe (Sr., Leonardtown, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) chalked up 12, and Young tallied 11.
  • Young was also in charge of setting up the offense along with Gubba. Young recorded 24 assists while Gubba came up with 20.

Up Next

The Jackets will square off with No. 2-seed Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals at Washington & Lee. It will be a rematch of the 2019 conference tournament championship.
