Women's Volleyball Sweeps Guilford with High Powered Offense

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) – The Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team bounced back with a dominating sweep of hosting Guilford on Saturday afternoon. Over two thirds of the points scored came on kills as the team hit over .300 for the first time all season.

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the first set as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead after an ace by Leslie Currie (Fr., Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover). The Quakers kept it close for the first half of the set and came within one of tying the game, but the last time that happened was at 12-11 before Randolph-Macon answered with kills by Sydney Koch (Jr., Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson) and Danielle LaRosa (Jr.,  Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle).
  • The Yellow Jackets closed the set with authority by scoring nine out of the last 12 points. The run started with a kill by Jordan Davis-Allen (So., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) and ended with the game point by Koch.
  • The momentum carried into the second set where the Jackets won one of their most decisive game of the season. They started the set with the first 10 points, nine of which were scored on kills. After Guilford called its second timeout and scored its first point, the Jackets went on another run and scored the next six points.
  • The most competitive set came in the third. The Quakers jumped out to a 5-2 lead before Randolph-Macon went on another large rally to take control. The Jackets scored the next nine points and 13 of the next 14 to take a 15-6 lead.
  • Guilford chipped away and cut the deficit to three at 17-14, and even closer at 23-22, but the Jackets finished it off with a kill by Koch and an error by the Quakers.

Inside the Numbers

  • Gracyn Draney (So., Forest, Va. / Jefferson Forest) and Koch led the offense with a match-best 12 kills each. Draney scored hers on 23 attempts for a hitting percentage of .391.
  • Emma Young (Sr., Highland Park, Ill. / Highland Park) and Brooke Young (Fr., Saint Leonard, Md. / Calvert) set up the attack with 24 and 16 assists, respectively. Emma added five digs and an ace as well.
  • Defensively Currie led the way with 16 digs while Koch added three blocks.
  • The 51 team kills are the second most in a single match this season and the most for a three set match on the year. The most is 54 in a four-set win at Randolph.

Up Next

The Jackets will have a couple of exhibition matches next against Christopher Newport. Their next regular season contest will come on Wednesday at Virginia Wesleyan.
