Field Hockey Upends Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – The Randolph-Macon field hockey team won its second consecutive game with a dominant performance against Virginia Wesleyan on Friday evening. The Marlins opened up the game with a quick goal, but after that it was all Yellow Jackets as they controlled the bulk of possession.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 3, Virginia Wesleyan 1

Venue: Nunnally Field

Records: R-MC 2-3, 2-3 ODAC; VWU 1-4, 1-4 ODAC

How It Happened:

  • Despite not having possession for most of the game, it was Virginia Wesleyan that struck first as Raquel Kelly scored 1:46 into the contest. She controlled the ball up the left side and drove along the baseline before taking a 1-on-1 opportunity with the goalie for the score.
  • It wasn't until late in the second when the Yellow Jackets were able to get the equalizer. A penalty corner resulted in a penalty shot taken by Tori Mumm (So., Forest Hill, Md. / Bel Air) who took it top shelf over Marlins keeper Maura Bridges outstretched arms.
  • After some adjustments at halftime, the Jackets attack started to take effect which resulted in a pair of Maria-Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) goals. The first came on an assist from Summer Kujawa (So., Hampton, Va. / Kecoughtan) at 37:07. The second came just over three minutes later on an assist by Emma Landis (Fr., Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) after Ambrogi-Torres deflected her shot. The play was originally set up by Sydney Duimstra (Jr., Montpelier, Va. / Deep Run) who provided the entry pass from the right wing.

Inside The Numbers:

  • The Jackets outshot the Marlins 24-6 overall in the contest. Of the six, just two came in the second half evenly split between the quarters. On the opposite end, Randolph-Macon outshot Virginia Wesleyan for the entire game in the third quarter alone with 12 shots. The Jackets equaled the Marlins in the fourth alone with six.
  • Corners also aided the Jackets by an 8-4 count.
  • Gatlin Snyder (Jr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) picked up the win with two saves with one in each of the first two quarters.
  • Ambrogi-Torres has scored two goals in each of the last two games to give her four on the season.

Up Next

The Jackets were scheduled to take on Sweet Briar this Wednesday, but that game has now been cancelled. As a result, Randolph-Macon's next game will be against Washington & Lee a week from today at 7 p.m.
