Volleyball Sweeps Saints In Season Opener

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – The season started against the same team that ended the last one for Randolph-Macon volleyball, but this time the Yellow Jackets came out on top with a sweep of visiting Marymount (RV). It was the fourth consecutive season opening win for R-MC, while the Saints, who are receiving votes nationally, dropped to 1-1.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 3, Marymount 0  (25-19, 25-16, 25-19)

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va. / Crenshaw Gym

Records: Randolph-Macon 1-0, Marymount 1-1

How it Happened:

  • Randolph-Macon barely trailed at any point during the match, and when it did, it wasn't for long. The first set saw the Jackets lead start to finish and lead by as many as seven at 13-6.
  • The second game was closer for the opening 12 points. A kill by Megan Bost (Fr., Angier, N.C. / West Johnson) tied the set at 6-6 and sparked a five point rally capped by kills from Madison Warlick (Jr., Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) and Grace Parker (So., Andover, N.J. / Pope John XXIII) to make the score 10-6.
  • The Saints cut the deficit to one, but it was the closest the visitors could get in the middle frame. The Jackets scored the next four points and went up 2-0 after closing the game with the final five points.
  • R-MC jumped out to a 9-3 lead which proved to be too much for Marymount to overcome. The Saints were able to get within two at 12-10 before R-MC extended the lead once again with four of the next five points. Seven of the final 10 points also went the way of the hosts.

By The Numbers

  • Balance was a strength for the Jackets as they had five players with at least five kills. Warlick and Sydney Koch (Jr., Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson) led the way on offense with seven kills each.
  • Setting up the attack were Macquire Gubba (Jr., Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) and Emma Young (Sr., Highland Park, Ill. / Highland Park). Gubba dished out 17 helpers, while Young was one shy of double-figures.
  • Serves were a strong suit for the Jackets as well with nine points coming on aces. Young tallied three. Warlick, Charli Dietz (Fr., Radford, Va. / Radford), and Gubba each had a pair.
  • On the front line, R-MC was able to stifle seven attacks by the Saints. Koch provided the most rejections as she went up and assisted on five blocks.
