Anthony & Mallory Lead #1 R-MC Men's Hoops past VWU

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and sophomore Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) both had 15 points and Anthony was one rebound away from a double-double as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball completed its regular season with a non-conference victory over Virginia Wesleyan.

How it Happened:

  • Junior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) nailed a three-pointer to christen the contest before the Marlins used a 9-2 run to take a 9-5 advantage four minutes into the contest. Sophomore Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) had a jumper and a trey to put the Yellow Jackets back on top at 10-9. After a bucket by VWU, Mallory had a follow and two free throws followed by a triple by sophomore Loginn Norton (Chesterfield, Va./James River) as R-MC led 17-11 with 12:25 left in the first half. VWU would score seven straight to take its final lead at 18-17. A jumper in the lane by senior Lorenzo Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) gave the home team the lead for good and sparked a 15-2 spurt, which was capped by a trey from Anthony, as the Yellow Jackets assumed a 32-20 lead with 3:45 remaining. The Marlins closed to within five before a layup by Mallory with 38 seconds left gave R-MC a 38-31 advantage at the break. Mallory had 10 in the first half, while Talbert tallied nine and Anthony chipped in eight.
  • Woods and Anthony hit three-pointers to start the second period as the lead grew to 13 at 44-31 three minutes in. The Marlins cut it to eight at 48-40 before a triple by Norton preceded layups by Mallory and Talbert to make it 55-40 with 11 minutes remaining. The lead stayed in double digits the rest of the way. Junior Daquan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) hit a pair of three throws with just under four minutes left to give R-MC its biggest lead at 72-53. The Yellow Jackets would record a 74-58 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • Mallory blocked a career-best seven shots against the Marlins, including five in the first half.
  • R-MC had four score in double figures. Along with 15 by Anthony and Mallory, Talbert put up 11 and Woods added 10.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 36-31 advantage on the boards. Anthony paced the victors with nine, while Mallory and Talbert each snared six.
  • Anthony led R-MC with six assists., while Talbert tallied four.

For The Record

  • The Yellow Jackets tied a Crenshaw Gymnasium record with 32 consecutive home wins, the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC also won 32 straight in Crenshaw from 1982-85.
  • Anthony has 1,349 career points, moving past Todd Bowden into 16th place on R-MC all-time scoring list.
  • Anthony has 535 career assists, good for third place in program history.
  • Anthony has 180 career steals, good for third place in program history.
