R-MC leads 76-38 since 1956

The Yellow Jackets have won seven straight, 20 of the past 21 and 34 of the past 36 meetings with the Maroons.     R-MC won 77-71 a season ago in Salem in the semifinals of the 2021 ODAC Tournament. R-MC defeated RC twice two seasons ago. The Yellow Jackets won 52-42 at Roanoke during the regular season and rallied for a 60-59 win in the semifinals of the 2020 ODAC Tournament.

Mallory is ODAC Player of the Week

Junior Miles Mallory was named ODAC Player of the Week for the second time this season. He had two double-doubles in two games this past weekend. Mallory had 11 points and 10 rebounds in a 78-58 victory over No. 24 New Jersey City. He also had two blocks and two assists. Mallory recorded career highs with 28 points and 17 rebounds in a 77-76 overtime loss at Christopher Newport. He had a double-double in the first half with 18 points and 10 boards. Mallory also had five blocks and four assists in 39 minutes.

Last Time Out

Buzz Anthony led all scorers with 23 points, and Miles Mallory recorded his third straight double-double and fourth of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, as R-MC defeated Virginia Wesleyan 65-53.

How it Happened:

  • The Marlins tallied the first five points of the game before layups by Josh Talbert and Mallory made it a one-point contest with 16:45 left in the first half. Two VWU buckets pushed the lead back to five before a three-pointer by Anthony made it 9-7 with 12 minutes remaining. The Marlins scored seven straight points to go up 16-7 before a triple by Anthony made it 16-10 with 7:45 left. VWU had a nine-point lead late before a follow by Mallory with under a minute remaining made it 26-19 at halftime.
  • A trey by Anthony sparked a 10-2 run, capped by a layup by Daniel Mbangue, as the Yellow Jackets took their first lead at 29-28 with 16:30 left. A layup by Anthony with 15 minutes remaining gave R-MC a 33-30 advantage. VWU used a 9-4 spurt to take a 39-37 edge before a three-pointer by Anthony with 12 minutes left put R-MC ahead for good. It started a 14-2 run that was finished by a triple from Loginn Norton as the Yellow Jackets led 51-41 with 7:50 remaining. VWU cut the deficit in half at 58-53 with two minutes left before Anthony had a three-pointer and a layup followed by a basket by David Funderburg that made the final score 65-53. R-MC shot 78% from the floor (18-23) in the second half after shooting 28% in the first half (8-29). R-MC hit five of six three-pointers in the second half.

Last Meeting

Buzz Anthony scored 20 points and dished out nine assists as top-ranked and fifth-seeded R-MC won at 15th-ranked and top-seeded Roanoke 77-71 in the ODAC semifinals.

How it Happened:

  • The Maroons scored the first three points before a pair of free throws by Anthony and a layup by Miles Mallory gave R-MC its first lead at 4-3. A three-pointer by Roanoke made it 6-4 before a triple and layup by Ian Robertson sparked a 19-4 run at R-MC took a 23-10 advantage with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Maroons scored the next six points before a layup by Anthony halted the spurt. A jumper by Anthony and a follow by Robertson gave the visitors a 29-18 edge with three minutes left. Roanoke closed the half on a 10-5 run as R-MC led 34-28 at the break.
  • Robertson nailed a three-pointer on R-MC's first possession of the second half to push the lead to 37-28. The Maroons hit a pair of treys around a layup by Mallory to shrink the deficit to five at 39-34. Mallory had five points in a 7-2 spurt as the Yellow Jackets went up 46-36 with 14:45 remaining. Roanoke used an 11-1 run to tie the game at 47-47 with 12 minutes left. Layups by Mallory, Talbert and Anthony gave R-MC a 53-47 lead midway through the period and sparked a 16-6 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 63-53 with 6:15 remaining. The R-MC defense held Roanoke without a field goal for more than six minutes. The Yellow Jackets pushed the lead to 13 at 70-57 with 1:45 left. R-MC scored its final seven points from the foul line in recording the 77-71 victory.

Anthony: National Player of the Week

Senior Buzz Anthony was named USBWA National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. He scored a career-high 32 points in an 88-74 win over #13 Emory. Anthony recorded his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 assists in an 82-74 win over #3 Marietta.

Taking Care of the Ball

R-MC is first in the ODAC and 15th in the nation in fewest turnovers per game at 10.2. A season ago, the Yellow Jackets led the ODAC and were seventh in the nation in turnovers per game in 9.7. R-MC is tops in the conference and 12th in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.57. The Yellow Jackets were first in the conference and seventh in the country a season ago in assist/turnover ratio at 1.64. Last season, R-MC was tops in the league and 15th in the nation in turnover margin at 4.3.

 

Daunting Defense

R-MC was first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation in scoring defense a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest.   R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game. This year, the Yellow Jackets are allowing 64.1 points per outing.
