Home Cookin'

With the victory over Virginia Wesleyan, R-MC extended its program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gym at 35. It is the longest current streak in Division III. R-MC previously won 32 straight in Crenshaw Gym from 1982-85. The overall program record for home winning streak is 50, from 1961-66.

 

Career Steals

Buzz Anthony now owns the R-MC program record with 202 career steals.

 

Last Time Out

Josh Talbert had season highs with 16 points and five steals as R-MC used a 19-3 run to start the second half in a 62-50 ODAC victory at Roanoke.

How it Happened:

  • David Funderburg had a layup to cap an 8-2 start for the Yellow Jackets three minutes into the contest. The Maroons eventually tied it at 10-10 before a layup by Talbert put R-MC up 12-10 six minutes in. RC used an 8-2 spurt to take an 18-14 edge with nine minutes remaining in the first half. A pair of three-pointers by Buzz Anthony gave the visitors a 20-18 advantage with 5:25 left. After the Maroons leveled the score at 20-20, Will Coble nailed a trey to put  R-MC ahead for good and Daniel Mbangue made two free throws to give the Yellow Jackets a 25-20 lead with 3:15 remaining. RC outscored R-MC 5-2 the rest of the way as the Yellow Jackets led 27-25 at halftime.
  • A layup by Funderburg capped a 19-3 run to start the second half as the Yellow Jackets took a 46-28 lead with 13:15 left. R-MC maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The Maroons closed to within a dozen before a layup by Anthony gave the Yellow Jackets a 56-42 advantage with 5:50 remaining. After a bucket by RC, Funderburg scored twice to make it 60-44 with two minutes left. The Maroons cut it to 10 before a dunk by Talbert with 25 seconds left completed the scoring as R-MC registered the 62-50 victory. The Yellow Jackets had three players score in double figures. Talbert scored 16, Anthony added 14 and Funderburg put in 12. It was the fourth win for R-MC over a ranked team in its past six games.

Last Meeting

Senior Andre Simon led all scorers with 22 points as R-MC earned a 63-55 victory at Gettysburg on Jan. 4, 2014.

How It Happened:

  • The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never trailed in the first period. R-MC held a 26-21 advantage at intermission. Junior Connor Sullivan scored 10 of his 16 points in the first half.
  • R-MC built an eight-point lead early in the second half at 33-25 before a 17-7 run by the Bullets (4-7) gave the home team a 42-40 advantage with 11 minutes remaining. Simon made a layup with 7:30 left to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good at 46-45. Gettysburg pulled to within two at 57-55 before R-MC went 6 for 6 from the free throw line over the final 30 seconds to secure the victory.
  • The victory pushed the Yellow Jackets' record to 7-4 and gave head coach Nathan Davis his 100th career win in his fifth season at his alma mater.
  • Simon was 10 for 17 from the floor and 2 for 4 from the free throw line. He added five rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
  • Sullivan went 5 for 9 on field goals, 3 for 4 on three-pointers and 3 for 4 from the free throw line.
  • Sullivan and junior Marcus Badger both had six assists for R-MC.

Anthony: National Player of the Week

Senior Buzz Anthony was named USBWA National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. He scored a career-high 32 points in an 88-74 win over #13 Emory. Anthony recorded his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 assists in an 82-74 win over #3 Marietta.

Taking Care of the Ball

R-MC is first in the ODAC and 34th in the nation in fewest turnovers per game at 11.4. A season ago, the Yellow Jackets led the ODAC and were seventh in the nation in turnovers per game in 9.7. R-MC is tops in the conference and 32nd in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.32. The Yellow Jackets were first in the conference and seventh in the country a season ago in assist/turnover ratio at 1.64. Last season, R-MC was tops in the league and 15th in the nation in turnover margin at 4.3.

 

Daunting Defense

R-MC was first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation in scoring defense a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest.   R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game. This year, the Yellow Jackets are second in the ODAC and 20th in the country, allowing 62.6 points per outing. Opponents have scored an average of 51.5 points per game over the past two contests.
