The Yellow Jackets and Eagles first met during the 1980-81 season, with R-MC posting an 84-69 victory. Hal Nunnally was 10-2 against Mary Washington. The teams have met five times in the past seven seasons, with UMW winning two straight and three of the past five contests. The Eagles hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to win in 2017.

With the win over Trine last season, R-MC set a program record for home winning streak in Crenshaw Gymnasium at 33. It is the longest current streak in Division III. The Yellow Jackets previously won 32 straight from 1982-85.

Win Streak

R-MC owns a 19-game win streak. The Yellow Jackets won the final five games of the 2019-20 campaign before going 12-0 this past season. R-MC is 2-0 so far this season.

 

Mallory is ODAC Player of the Week

Junior Miles Mallory is the initial ODAC Player of the Week. He was the MVP of the MMI Tipoff Tournament after averaging 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in a pair of wins for the Yellow Jackets.

 

Last Time Out

Buzz Anthony led all scorers with 26 points as R-MC defeated host Hood in the championship game of the MMI Tipoff Tournament.

How it Happened:

•           The Blazers hit a three-pointer to start the scoring before layups by Anthony and Miles Mallory gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 lead four minutes into the contest. Another triple by HC made it 6-4 before Daniel Mbangue had four points in a 12-2 run as R-MC took a 16-8 lead with 12 minutes left in the first period. A jumper by Mbangue gave the Yellow Jackets their first double-figure lead at 25-14 with 6:15 remaining. The Blazers closed to within nine at 27-18 before a three-pointer by Anthony capped a 7-0 spurt to close the half as R-MC went up 34-18. Anthony had 12 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. The R-MC defense held HC to 17% shooting from the floor (5-29).

•           HC scored the first eight points of the second half before a layup by Mallory stopped the run and gave the visitors a 36-26 lead two minutes into the period. The Blazers trailed by seven at 40-33 before treys by Anthony and Loginn Norton capped a 9-1 run as the Yellow Jackets went up 49-34 with 13:40 left. Vincent Payne nailed three triples in his return to his hometown as the lead grew to 20 at 63-43 with eight minutes left. R-MC maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Anthony and Can Dalli buried late treys to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 84-61 before a pair of free throws by HC made the final 84-63.

By The Numbers:

•           R-MC had three score in double figures. Along with 26 by Anthony, Mallory put in 16 and Payne added 11.

 

Last Meeting

Buzz Anthony had his second triple double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as R-MC fell 70-65 at Mary Washington. Miles Mallory hit a baseline jumper to start the scoring before a 7-1 spurt by the Eagles made it 7-3 four minutes in. A bucket in the lane by Mallory halted the run and made it a two-point contest. Anthony had a trey and two free throws that pulled R-MC within one at 11-10 with 11:50 left in the first half. UMW led 13-10 before a layup by Josh Talbert and treys by Talbert, Mallory and Corey Bays made up an 11-0 spurt as R-MC took a 21-13 advantage with nine minutes left. The Eagles would score seven straight points before a trey by Bays and a one-hander by David Funderburg put the Yellow Jackets up 26-20 with 4:35 left. UMW had back-to-back three-pointers to cap a 10-4 run to tie the game at 30-30 with just under two minutes left. A triple by Ian Robertson with 10 seconds left finished an 8-2 spurt for the visitors as R-MC led 38-32 at the break. UMW had the first three points of the second half before a jumper and a triple by Korey Turner gave R-MC a 43-37 advantage with 16:15 remaining. Following a trey by the Eagles, Bays hit a three-pointer, Mallory finished a layup and Robertson had a follow as R-MC took a 50-40 lead with 13:35 left.  UMW scored 11 straight to go up 51-50 with 9:11 left. A jumper by Anthony and a layup by Mallory put R-MC on top 56-53 with 7:15 left. The Eagles tallied seven straight to take a 60-56 advantage with 4:15 left. Bays hit a trey with 3:25 left pulled R-MC within one at 62-61.  R-MC trailed by four before Talbert and Anthony connected on both ends of one-and-ones to tie the score at 65-65 with 2:11 left. UMW would score the final five points and claim the 70-65 win.

Preseason All-Americans

R-MC had two players named to the D3hoops.com Preseason All-America teams. Senior Buzz Anthony was named All-America First Team, while junior Miles Mallory was named All-America Second Team.

Daunting Defense

R-MC was first in the ODAC and fourth in the nation in scoring defense a season ago, allowing 58.2 points per contest. The Yellow Jackets held three of their final six opponents to 55 points or less. R-MC led the nation in scoring defense two seasons ago at 57.3 points per game. This year, the Yellow Jackets are allowing 62.0 points per outing.

 

Scoring Margin

Last season, the Yellow Jackets topped the ODAC and were fourth in the country in scoring margin at 20.5. This season, R-MC tops the ODAC with a scoring margin of 15.0.

 

Take Care of the Ball

A season ago, R-MC led the ODAC and were seventh in the nation in turnovers per game in 9.7. The Yellow Jackets were first in the conference and seventh in the country in assist/turnover ratio at 1.64. R-MC was tops in the league and 15th in the nation in turnover margin at 4.3. This season, the Yellow Jackets have committed 12.5 turnovers per game with assist/turnover ratio of 1.04. The turnover margin for R-MC is -1.0.
