This will be the first meeting between  R-MC and the Gothic Knights.

 

The Series: R-MC leads CNU 19-10

The Yellow Jackets and Captains first met in the 1976-77 season, with R-MC posting a 91-67 victory. The Yellow Jackets won the first nine encounters.   R-MC is 10-4 at home and 9-6 on the road vs. CNU. R-MC won the most recent meeting, taking a 79-62 triumph on Dec. 7, 2019. The Captains won the previous seven meetings, including a 72-61 win in Newport News in 2018.

Win Streak

R-MC owns a 22-game win streak. The Yellow Jackets won the final five games of the 2019-20 campaign before going 12-0 this past season. R-MC is 5-0 so far this season.

 

Anthony: National Player of the Week

Senior Buzz Anthony was named USBWA National Player of the Week on Nov. 23. He scored a career-high 32 points in an 88-74 win over #13 Emory. Anthony recorded his second double-double of the year with 15 points and 13 assists in an 82-74 win over #3 Marietta.

Last Meeting

Miles Mallory recorded his second double-double with a season-high 21 points and matching his season best with 10 rebounds as No. 9 R-MC defeated No. 18 CNU 79-62. The Captains had the first two buckets of the game before jumpers by Korey Turner and Buzz Anthony tied the score at 4-4. A layup by David Funderburg gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 8-7 with 14:35 left in the first half. CNU led 16-14 before a jumper by Terry Woods and a three-pointer by Daquan Morris put     R-MC on top 19-16 with eight minutes left in the first period. The Captains had a layup with 6:55 left to take a 21-19 lead. That would be the final field goal of the half for CNU. The Yellow Jackets scored 13 straight points to take a 32-21 advantage with 1:30 left. Ian Robertson had a layup and a trey to highlight the run. The Captains hit a pair of free throws before a layup by Woods with 8.9 seconds remaining to make it 34-23 at the break. Woods paced R-MC with eight points, while Robertson added seven. Mallory hit four straight shots as R-MC went up 47-33 with 14:30 left in the second half. Anthony hit two jumpers and four free throws as the Yellow Jackets took a 55-41 advantage with 9:15 remaining. Mallory had a steal and a layup as the lead grew to 22 at 76-54 with 2:20 left. R-MC would eventually register the 79-62 victory. The Yellow Jackets had three score in double figures. Mallory went 9 for 13 from the floor and 3 for 4 from the free throw line for his 21 points. Anthony went 7 for 8 on free throws as part of his 18 points. Woods was 5 for 7 from the field for 10 points. R-MC shot 42% from the floor in the first half (15-36) and 68% in the second half (17-25) for 52.5% for the game (32-61).

Last Time Out

Buzz Anthony recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 assists to lead No. 1 R-MC past No. 3 Marietta 82-74.

How It Happened:

  • Anthony had a triple and a jumper as R-MC took a 5-0 lead. The Pioneers hit a pair of threes to go up 6-5 three minutes in. Ian Robertson and Will Coble hit treys to cap a 13-2 spurt as R-MC went ahead 18-8 with 12:40 left in the first half. MC scored 10 straight to tie it before a layup by Miles Mallory ended the run and put the visitors up 20-18 with 5:45 left. The Pioneers scored five in a row to take a three-point edge before Ben Cerrato had a steal and layup to make it a one-point game at 23-22. MC hit a free throw and Daniel Mbangue made a free throw as       R-MC trailed 24-23 at the half.
  • David Funderburg had a follow, while Cerrato hit a trey and a layup as R-MC scored the first seven points of the second half to go up 30-24 with 17:40 left. A triple by MC cut the deficit to three before a three-point play by Josh Talbert sparked an 8-2 spurt as R-MC took a 38-29 advantage with 15:25 left. MC cut the deficit to three at 52-49 before two layups by Mallory were sandwiched around a Pioneer free throw, and Robertson nailed a trey for a 59-50 lead with 6:25 remaining. A jumper by Anthony capped a 7-3 spurt as R-MC took a 71-60 lead with 2:35 left. Mallory went 6 for 6 from the free throw line in the final 1:20, and Cerrato had a dunk at the buzzer to make the final 82-74.
