Box Score (GREENSBORO, N.C.) – A second quarter surge sent Randolph-Macon past Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC field hockey action Wednesday night. Alaina McCoy (Fr., Frediericksburg, Va. / Stafford) scored twice and all four of the Yellow Jackets' goals came during that time frame.
The Basics
Score: Randolph-Macon 4, Virginia Wesleyan 1
Venue: Birdsong Field
Records: Randolph-Macon 5-5, 1-1 ODAC; Virginia Wesleyan 2-6, 0-2 ODAC
How It Happened:
- After a scoreless first quarter, the goals came in a hurry during the second. Just 1:49 into the frame during a penalty corner, Summer Kujawa (Jr., Hampton, Va. / Kecoughtan) took the receiving pass and sent it to Mia Kuhnle (Fr., Yorktown, Va. / Tabb) on the left wing of the circle who fired it home with a hard shot.
- Alli Moore (So., Ashland, Va. / Hanover) provided the second goal just 43 seconds later. After receiving a pass from the left side, she was able to make a move around the Marlins' goalkeeper to find the back of the goal.
- McCoy scored her first thanks to an odd-woman rush that left her and Kuhnle alone with the keeper. This time Kuhnle provided the helper as she found McCoy wide open on the right side for the 3-0 lead.
- After three goals were scored in a span of 3:04, the fourth and final Jackets' tally came 80 seconds before halftime. McCoy scored her second from the left side and beat the keeper stick side.
- Virginia Wesleyan's lone score came just inside the start of the fourth. However, the hosts were limited to just one shot the rest of the way which prevented any hopes of a comeback.
Inside The Numbers:
- The Lemon and Black outshot the Marlins 21-7 overall in the game.
- Gatlin Snyder (Sr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) stopped four of five shots on goal.
- Penalty corners also favored the Jackets by a 6-2 count.
- McCoy continues her incredible rookie campaign with her fifth and sixth goals of the season.
- Kuhnle's multiple point game is the second of the season.
