McCoy Scores Twice As Field Hockey Fights Off Eagles

Box Score

(ASHLAND, Va.) – Alaina McCoy scored a pair of goals as Randolph-Macon assured itself of a winning record in the regular season with a shutout of Bridgewater in field hockey on Wednesday evening. The Yellow Jackets scored in each of the first three quarters and limited the Eagles to just two shots on goal in the entire game.

The Basics

Score: Randolph-Macon 3, Bridgewater 0

Venue: Nunnally Field

Records: Randolph-Macon 9-7, 4-3 ODAC; Bridgewater 6-11, 3-5 ODAC

How It Happened

  • Maria-Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Trinity) opened the scoring in the eighth minute as she took the pass from Bella McNulty (Fr., Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) and converted on a sweep shot in front of the goal.
  • Alaina McCoy (Fr., Fredericksbur, Va. / Stafford) provided the next two goals, the first coming in the second quarter. Anna Stribling (So., Annandale, Va. / W.T. Woodson) provided the entry pass and McCoy was able to corral it in front of the BC keeper and score.
  • McCoy later made it 3-0 after weaving through the Eagles defense for her second goal of the game with 10:14 to go in the third.
  • Bridgewater had an opportunity early in the third quarter and was preparing for a shot by moving in closer, but Sydney Duimstra (Sr., Montpelier, Va. / Deep Run) intercepted the ball to prevent a shot from being taken.
  • Annika Egerland (Jr., Forest Hill, Md. / Bel Air) had a similar play in denying Bridgewater late when it appeared the Eagles would have an opportunity one on one with Gatlin Snyder (Sr., Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan).

Inside The Numbers

  • Snyder picked up another shutout for her fourth of the season. Thanks to a stout defense she only faced two shots on goal and made the save on both during the third quarter.
  • Randolph-Macon outshot Bridgewater 24-6 overall and 14-2 in shots on goal.
  • Penalty corners slightly favored the Lemon and Black by a 7-6 margin.
  • McCoy's first two-goal game of her career now gives her 10 on the season. She's second on the team in goals, just behind Ambrogi-Torres who scored her 11th tonight.

Up Next

The Yellow Jackets will face Roanoke at home in the season finale. It will be the first of two consecutive games against the Maroons as the two are already set to face each other in the playoffs. The only question will be where Tuesday's game will take place with the results of Saturday playing a large factor in that. Game time on Saturday is set for 4 p.m.
