How It Happened (Match 1 vs. Ferrum)

  • The teams went back and forth until it was 6-all which is when Randolph-Macon started to take control of the match. Madison Warlick (Sr., Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) sparked an 8-0 run with a kill that was immediately followed by three kills from Sydney Koch (Sr., Raleigh, N.C. / Sanderson). Koch ended up with seven in the set.
  • The second set saw the Jackets use another mid-set run to go up by double-digits. The Lemon and Black scored eight of 10 points to take a 19-9 lead after another Warlick kill. The Panthers didn't go away quietly and eventually scored five consecutive points to get to 19 before the Lemon and Black scored game point.
  • Randolph-Macon wasted little time in the third. The Jackets reeled off the first six points and never trailed. They led by as many as 14 after kills by Koch, Grace Parker (Jr., Andover, N.J. / Pope John XXIII), and a Ferrum error made the score 24-10.

Inside The Numbers (Match 1 vs. Ferrum)

  • Koch obliterated the ball and finished with 17 kills, a new career-high regardless of match length. She recorded them on 23 attempts with just two errors for a hitting percentage of .652.
  • Koch also provided the most trouble up front for Ferrum as she rejected four attempts by the Panthers.
  • Macguire Gubba (Sr., Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) totaled 42 assists for a new personal best in three-set matches.
  • The 46 kills are the second-most for RMC in a three-set match this season.
  • The 19 points Ferrum scored in the second set were the first time an opponent had scored more than 18 points in 13 games for the Jackets.

How It Happened (Match 2 vs. Roanoke)

  • Host Roanoke provided the toughest test of the day for the Yellow Jackets and forced them to come from behind with a first set win. RMC led at 11-9 after a 4-0 run capped by a Koch kill, but the Hornets answered with a 6-0 run and never trailed again.
  • Game 2 was all RMC as it never trailed. The Jackets jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the early part of the set and reached its largest lead with the final point on a kill by Warlick.
  • The Jackets looked to go up 2-1 in the third, but the Maroons had other ideas and rallied to take the set with the last four points.
  • Another dominate performance by the Yellow Jackets awaited Roanoke in the fourth. It nearly mirrored the second as RMC took a big 12-3 lead early and cruised the rest of the way to force a fifth.
  • The fifth was an epitome of the match with both teams battling back and forth before the Yellow Jackets edged out the win in the end. Tied at nine-all, the Yellow Jackets scored six of the last seven points to go unbeaten on the day.
