Robertson Hits 8 Treys & 30 Points for R-MC Men's Hoops vs. H-SC

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) sank eight three-pointers as part of his career-high 30 points, and sophomore Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 boards,  as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored Hampden-Sydney in a non-conference contest on Saturday evening in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

How it Happened:

  • The teams stayed with two points of each other during the first eight minutes of the game. The Tigers led 14-13 before a triple by Robertson and a jumper by Mallory gave the Yellow Jackets an 18-14 lead with 11:55 left in the first period. H-SC pulled within one before junior Daquan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) had a layup and a trey as R-MC went up 25-21 with 7:50 remaining. The Tigers had eight of the next 10 points to claim a 29-27 edge with six minutes left. Robertson scored the next 14 points for the Yellow Jackets, with four triples and a pair of free throws, as R-MC took a 41-33 lead with 1:45 left. H-SC had four of the final six points of the period as the Yellow Jackets took a 43-37 lead at the break. Robertson had 17 first-half points, while Mallory added 10.
  • The Tigers cut the deficit to three at 47-44 before a pair of treys by Morris started a 12-5 spurt, capped by a triple and a free throw by freshman Will Paige (Leesburg, Va./Paul VI) as R-MC took its first double-digit lead at 59-49 with 12:20 remaining. The Yellow Jackets led by seven before a 10-3 run was made up by two free throws and a follow by Mallory followed by a pair of three-pointers by Robertson, as R-MC took its largest lead at 72-58 with 4:40 left. The Yellow Jackets had their final five points from the free throw line in posting the 79-65 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had three score in double figures. Along with 30 by Robertson and 17 by Mallory, Morris tallied a career-best 11.
  • Robertson finished 9 for 14 from the floor, 8 for 13 on treys and 4 for 4 from the free throw line.
  • Morris was 4 for 6 from the floor and 3 for 5 from behind the arc.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 37-21 advantage on the boards. Mallory grabbed 11 and freshman Ben Cerrato (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) added a season-high six. R-MC had a 14-6 advantage in second-chance points.
  • Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) paced the Yellow Jackets with eighth assists. Senior Lorenzo Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) dished out a season-best six assists.

For The Record

  • Robertson's previous high was 18 points against Lynchburg on Feb. 8, 2020.
  • Mallory now has six career double-doubles.
  • H-SC was the first opponent to score more than 60 points against R-MC this season.
  • R-MC extended its home winning streak to 30 games, the longest current streak in Division III.
  • The Yellow Jackets are 39-6 (87%) in the month of January over the past six seasons under head coach Josh Merkel.
  • Anthony has 1,282 career points, moving past Kurt Bergmann and Danny Jones into 23rd place on R-MC all-time scoring list.
  • Anthony has 514 career assists, good for third place in program history.
  • Anthony has 170 career steals, tied with Paul Gartlan in fifth place.
