Anthony Helps #2 R-MC Men's Hoops Buzz H-SC 84-58

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had 19 points, five assists and five steals as the second-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team handed Hampden-Sydney an 84-58 ODAC loss on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened:

  • Anthony hit a jumper and a three-pointer in the first minute as the Yellow Jackets took a lead they would not relinquish. Another trey by Anthony gave R-MC a 20-6 lead with 14 minutes left in the first period. The Yellow Jackets maintained a double-digit lead, and a three-pointer by senior Kent Kilgroe (St. Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep) gave the home team an 18-point advantage at 33-15 with midway through the first half. The Tigers closed within 13 before a jumper by senior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) and a pair of free throws by freshman Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) pushed the lead to 17 at 37-20 with seven minutes remaining. H-SC narrowed the gap to eight before buckets by sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and Anthony gave the home team a 49-37 lead at the break. Anthony had 13 points, three assists and three steals in the first half, while senior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) hit three treys for nine points. Turner and freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) both had four rebounds, while Turner dished out five assists.
  • R-MC started the second half on a 26-7 run over the first 13 minutes, taking their largest lead at 31 points by the score of 75-44. Anthony and Woods both had six points in the spurt. The Tigers trimmed the margin to 26 before buckets by Robertson and sophomore Daquan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) extended the margin to 30 at 79-49 with three minutes left. H-SC had nine straight points before Talbert scored in the lane and freshman Alex Fabiato (Richmond, Va./Steward School) nailed a three-pointer in the final minute to make the final score 84-58.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had three score in double figures. Along with 19 by Anthony, Bays and Woods both tallied a dozen.
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 53% from the floor (32-60) and made half their three-point attempts (15-30). Bays and Woods both buried four, while Anthony sank three.
  • Turner and Mallory each had six rebounds.
  • R-MC had 25 assists on 32 field goals. Turner and Anthony each had five, Bays added four, and Robertson, Talbert and Mallory each had three.
  • The Yellow Jackets committed just five turnovers, compared to 19 by the Tigers. R-MC had a 17-2 advantage in points off turnovers. The Yellow Jackets had 12 steals, including five by Anthony.

  • Anthony has 151 career steals and moved into seventh place in program history, passing Kurt Axe's total of 150.
