Anthony, Turner Lead #3 R-MC Men's Hoops over SU 85-59

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led all scorers with 18 points and dished out eight assists, while senior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) added 10 points and a season-high nine assists, as the third-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team earned an 85-59 ODAC victory on Wednesday evening.

How it Happened:

  • A layup off the tap by senior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) and a three-pointer by Turner gave the Yellow Jackets a quick 5-0 lead. Following a trey by the Hornets, freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) tallied all the points in a 7-2 run as R-MC went up 12-5 four minutes into the contest. A follow by junior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) sparked a 9-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Anthony, as the Yellow Jackets took a 26-10 lead with 8:50 left. Anthony had 10 points in a 20-11 run to close the half, finished by layups by sophomore Daquan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) and freshman Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam), as R-MC led 46-21 at halftime. Anthony led with 13 points, while Mallory added nine. Nine different Yellow Jackets scored in the first half. The home team shot 54% from the floor (19-35) and 44% on treys (7-16). Anthony was 5-5 from the floor and 3-3 from beyond the arc. The R-MC defense held SU to 36% shooting (8-22) and forced 13 turnovers by the Hornets. The Yellow Jackets had a 19-0 advantage in points from turnovers and 20-6 on points in the paint.
  • R-MC started the second half with three-pointers by Bays, Turner and Anthony as the advantage grew to 55-27 with 15:35 remaining. After a bucket by SU, a layup by Talbert and a jumper by Anthony made it a 30-point contest at 59-29 with 14 minutes left. A pair of layups by Morris gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of 32 at 69-37 with 9:10 remaining. The Hornets would get no closer than 26 the rest of the way as R-MC recorded the 85-59 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had five players score in double figures. Anthony went 7 for 9 from the floor and 4 for 5 on treys for his 18 points. Mallory had 17, while Turner, Talbert and sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) all tallied 10.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 34-28 edge on the boards. Mallory pulled down eight and Funderburg grabbed six.
  • Turner and Mallory both had two steals.
  • Mallory had three blocks, raising his season total to 56.
  • R-MC had a 25-2 advantage in points off turnovers, 42-22 for points in the paint, 16-7 on second chance points and 13-2 on fast breaks.

For The Record

  • R-MC remains the only team without a loss in ODAC play. The Yellow Jackets are 10-0 in conference contests. All other ODAC teams have at least two league losses.
  • The Yellow Jackets have won seven straight and 20 of the past 22 meetings with the Hornets.
  • R-MC had five score in double figures for the fourth time this season. The Yellow Jackets also accomplished the feat against St. Mary's (Md.), Lebanon Valley and Emory & Henry.
  • Anthony raised his career points total to 1,018 and moved up three spots to No. 38 on the program's all-time scoring list.

Up Next:

  • Randolph-Macon remains at home on Saturday, Feb. 1 for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest with Emory & Henry in Crenshaw Gym. It will be the annual Matt Davis Foundation Game, with part of the proceeds from the game going to the Matt Davis Foundation.
