Anthony Reaches 1,000 Career Points in #3 R-MC Men's Hoops Win at RC

SALEM, Va. - Junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led all scorers with 15 points and reached 1,000 points for his career as the third-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team pulled out a 52-42 ODAC victory at Roanoke on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics:

How it Happened:

  • Defense held the upper hand early, as the Maroons hit their first bucket with 17:42 remaining and Anthony made a pair of free throws for the Yellow Jackets to tie the game at 2-2 with 17:17 left in the first period. RC took a 6-2 advantage before sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) had five points in a 9-0 run as R-MC took an 11-6 lead with 12:20 remaining. The Maroons put together a 9-2 spurt to reclaim the lead the 15-13 with eight minutes left. Anthony had seven points in an 8-1 run to put the Yellow Jackets on top 21-16 with 1:45 left. RC would close within one before a layup by junior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) just before the buzzer gave R-MC a 23-20 edge at the break. Anthony had nine points and four rebounds, while Mallory added three points and pulled down 10 boards.
  • The Maroons hit a trey to tie the game before buckets by Robertson and Mallory made it 27-23 with 17:40 remaining in the second half. RC pulled within two before a Funderburg layup capped a 10-0 run for the Yellow Jackets. The R-MC defense held the Maroons scoreless for six minutes in taking a 37-25 lead with 10:45 left. After RC narrowed the gap to eight, Robertson had a three-pointer and a free throw in a 6-0 spurt as the Yellow Jackets took their largest lead at 14 with a 43-29 advantage with just under seven minutes remaining. RC tallied the next five points before Anthony sank a pair of free throws to make it 45-34 with five minutes left. A one-hander by Funderburg and two more foul shots by Anthony pushed the lead to 15 at 49-34 with 3:30 remaining. After a layup by Anthony, which gave him 1,000 career points, RC hit a pair of three-pointers before a free throw by senior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) ended the scoring and made the final 52-42.

By The Numbers:

  • R-MC had three players score in double figures. Anthony had four field goals, one three-pointer and went 6 for 6 from the free throw line for his 15 points.
  • Funderburg finished with 13, going 6 for 10 from the floor and 1 for 1 from the free throw line. It was his second-highest point total of the season, trailing only his 16 against Bridgewater.
  • Robertson put up 11, giving him two double-figure games in the past three. He went 4 for 7 from the floor, hit a pair of treys and made one free throw.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 40-32 advantage on the boards. Mallory had a season-high 15 and has averaged 10.8 rebounds over the past five contests. Anthony had six rebounds, while Funderburg and Robertson each grabbed five.
  • Mallory had a season-high six blocks.
  • Anthony dished out five assists.

For The Record

  • R-MC remains the only team without a loss in ODAC play. The Yellow Jackets are 9-0 in conference contests. All other ODAC teams have at least two league losses.
  • Anthony is the 41st player in program history to score 1,000 career points. He is the first to reach the plateau since Andre Simon hit the mark in 2014.
  • Anthony is shooting 91.2% from the free throw line this season. He hit all 14 of his attempts over the past two games.
  • The Yellow Jackets entered the game leading the nation in scoring defense at 54.4 points per game. R-MC has held four of its past five opponents below 50 points.
