Defense Shines At Lynchburg

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Yellow Jackets' defense was stellar throughout the contest, but the Lynchburg Hornets were able to slip a pair of goals by to win as Randolph-Macon Field Hockey fell in the conference opener for both squads Friday night.

The Basics

Score: Lynchburg 2, Randolph-Macon 0

Location/Venue: Lynchburg, Va./Shellenburger Field

Records: Lynchburg (7-3, 1-0 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (4-5, 0-1 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • R-MC was stellar in the first quarter. Sophomore goalkeeper Gatlin Snyder (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) saved all three shots on goal amongst the five total shots Lynchburg sent towards the cage.
  • R-MC had its two best scoring chances of the night in the first quarter as well. Junior Maria Teresa Ambrogi-Torres (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) took a shot that escaped wide. That touched off a sequence that launched into a penalty corner situation for R-MC, which also led to a second corner. Off of the latter's setup, junior Ayanna Healy (Newport News, Va. / Woodside) managed to squeeze a shot off, but it was blocked. Neither team get on the scoreboard in the period.
  • The R-MC defensive unit of Snyder, junior Claire Magill (Moseley, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School), sophomores Sydney Duimstra (Montpelier, Va. / Deep Run) and Abby Sloan (Chester, Va. / Thomas Dale) and freshman Tori Mumm (Forest Hill, Md. / Bel Air) again were able to stand tall in the face of Hornet pressure in the second frame. They knocked away seven chances by Lynchburg throughout the period. One shot did make it through to the boards with about a minute and a half to go in the frame, giving Lynchburg the 1-0 advantage at the break.
  • Lynchburg was able to keep possession for much of the third quarter. But the R-MC defense shut out the Hornets in the frame, even in the face of ten shots.
  • Lynchburg finished with a second goal in the 47th minute of the fourth quarter to settle the final score at 2-0.

Inside The Numbers

  • Snyder finished with 15 saves on the night, including five in the third quarter.
