Wood, Deeter Lead #12 R-MC Softball to Sweep of Gettysburg

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Savannah Wood (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) had five hits and five runs, while freshman Kaitlyn Deeter (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) drove in five, as the 12th-ranked Randolph-Macon softball team swept a doubleheader from Gettysburg on Saturday to extend its win streak to 15.

The Yellow Jackets (15-1) took the opener 8-1 and blanked the Bullets (3-9) in the nightcap 13-0 in five innings.

After GC scored in the top of the first in Game 1, R-MC responded in the bottom of the frame. Deeter delivered a two-run single with two away, stole second and scored on a base hit by junior Brittany LaPrade (Quinton, Va./New Kent) to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the third. Sophomore Sami Davidson (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) had a run-scoring single, senior Harley Jones added a two-run triple and sophomore Shelby Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./St. Margaret's) knocked in a pair with a base hit to make it 8-1.

Wood and junior Kerstin Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) both had two hits and two runs.

Junior Candace Whittemore (Montpelier, Va./Patrick Henry) earned the victory, going seven innings with six hits, one run, one walk and nine strikeouts to raise her record to 7-1,

R-MC would put up multiple runs in each of the first three innings in Game 2. Jones belted a two-run homer in the first to give the home team a 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets would put up seven in the second. Hill hammered a two-run double, Davidson added an RBI single, Jones scored on a wild pitch and Deeter smacked a three-run dinger to put R-MC up 9-0.

R-MC would add four more in the third. Wood and freshman Lauren Richardson (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) both had two-run singles as the lead ballooned to 13-0.

Wood went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBI, while Deeter was 2 for 2 with three RBI. Hill went 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBI.

Freshman Madie Rhoads (Portsmouth, Va./Nansemond River) allowed one hit and one walk in four innings with nine strikeouts to improve to 3-0. Freshman Kayley Scott (Henrico, Va./Lee-Davis) preserved the shutout with a hitless fifth with one strikeout.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Sunday, March 18 with a home doubleheader against Norwich at 12 p.m.
