R-MC Football Falls at #23 MC in Round of 16 Playoffs

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Junior Anthony Williams (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) recorded another pair of interceptions and junior Calvin Whitehead (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) had nine tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, as the Randolph-Macon football team dropped a 35-6 decision at No. 23 Muhlenberg Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Championship.

How It Happened

  • The Mules took the opening kickoff and drove 73 yards for an early touchdown.
  • Williams had his third post-season interception midway through the first quarter, giving the Yellow Jackets the ball on the MC 12. Junior Burke Estes (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) dove in from two yards out to make it 7-6 with 5:49 left in the opening period.
  • MC added TDs late in the first quarter and late in the second period to take a 21-6 lead at intermission.
  • The Yellow Jackets were forced to punt on their first possession of the second half and the Mules drove for another touchdown to lead 28-6 with 6:50 left in the third period. MC returned an interception for a score in the fourth period to make it 35-6.
  • Williams had his second pickoff of the day deep in R-MC territory midway through the fourth quarter.

By The Numbers

  • Williams leads the Yellow Jackets and is tied for the top spot in the ODAC with seven interceptions. He had two in each of R-MC's final three games.
  • Williams also had four kickoff returns for 81 yards, and one punt return for 13 yards.
  • Senior Yonis Blanco (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair), junior De'Angelo Barr (Washington, D.C./Fairfax) and sophomore Victor Robinson (Suffolk, Va./Kings Fork) each had seven tackles for R-MC.
  • The final punt for senior Julian Drew (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) was the longest of his career. It went 68 yards and was downed on the MC10 with 5:20 left in the fourth quarter.
  • R-MC narrowly lost time of possession for just the second time this season. MC held the ball for 30:45, while the Yellow Jackets had the ball for 29:15.

Notes

  • R-MC set a program record by playing 12 games this season. The Yellow Jackets tied the school record with nine wins.
