Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon field hockey battled in a defensive bout in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the run of first half scores and the Lynchburg Hornets as the Yellow Jackets fell 4-2.

Score: Lynchburg 4, Randolph-Macon 2

Location/Venue: Ashland, Va./Day Field

Records: Lynchburg (5-5, 1-1 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (3-6, 0-2 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Lynchburg drew first blood with a goal two and a half minutes in as Jackie Lerro scored along the right side of goal after a pass from Nikki Simpao.
  • Sophomore Austyn Faries (Richmond, Va. / Monacan) answered. She took a rebounded shot and placed it above Hornet goalie Laurel Nicks and into the back of the cage to tie the match at 1-1.
  • In a carbon copy of her first goal, Lerro scored again in the 12th minute after a pass from Simpao and slotted the ball into the back of the cage from the right side of goal to give Lynchburg a 2-1 edge.
  • The two swapped places with Lerro tipping the ball to Simpao to score in the 21st minute to push the Hornets up 3-1.
  • R-MC brought the game closer in the 24th minute as sophomore Kaylene Thomas (Suffolk, Va. / Lakeland) scored on a penalty corner situation, which was inserted by freshman Abby Sloan (Chester, Va. / Thomas Dale). It marked Thomas' first goal of the season.
  • Lynchburg added a goal for cushion as Lerro took her own rebound and fired it past the R-MC defense to take the 4-2 lead, which was the final score.
  • Both defenses took command of the second half, each protecting their respective cages in the second half. R-MC made 14 saves in the second period, sending away almost 80% of Lynchburg's tries on goal.

Inside The Numbers

  • R-MC made 24 saves on the game, with freshman Gatlin Snyder (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) sending away 20 tries. Sophomore Megan May (Hayes, Va. / Gloucester) and freshman Sydney Duimstra (Montpelier, Va. / Deep Run) each tallied two defensive saves as well.
  • R-MC was led by Thomas, Faries and freshman Katie Brookman (Culpeper, Va. / Eastern View) who each tried two shots, with all six coming on goal. Sophomore Ayanna Healy (Newport News, Va. / Woodside) also tried a pair of shots that were blocked and went wide respectively.
