Adams Sparks Strong Second Half as R-MC Men's Hoops Beats SU 80-66

ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team topped Shenandoah 80-66 in ODAC action Wednesday evening in Crenshaw Gym.

The Yellow Jackets (9-3, 3-0 ODAC) have won three straight. The Hornets fell to 6-6 overall, 1-2 in the ODAC.

Adams returned to action after missing the past two games. He went 9 for 14 from the floor, including 6 for 9 in the second stanza. Junior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen,Va./Glen Allen) had 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) added 10 points and matched his career high with six boards.

Junior Luke Neeley (Orange, Va./Woodberry Forest) and Turner hit three-pointers as R-MC took an early 6-2 lead. SU scored nine straight points to take an 11-6 lead with 16:40 left in the first period. The Yellow Jackets trailed 18-15 before layups by senior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) and Midulla saw R-MC reclaim the lead at 19-18 with 11 minutes remaining. A bucket by Adams pushed the Yellow Jacket lead to 23-20 with just under nine minutes remaining. The Hornets used a 10-2 spurt to take a 30-25 advantage with five minutes left. Midulla had a layup and a trey to highlight a 6-0 run as R-MC went up 31-30 with 3:25 remaining. SU led 37-35 with 55 seconds left before a three-pointer by Neeley and two free throws by freshman Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) gave the Yellow Jackets a 40-37 edge at intermission. Neeley paced R-MC with eight points, while Midulla added seven. Anthony dished out six assists in the first period.

Adams had two buckets as R-MC scored the first six points of the second half, giving the home team its largest lead at 46-37 with 17:15 left. The Yellow Jacket defense held SU without a field goal for the first 5:40 of the second half as the lead grew to 10 at 49-39. The Hornets cut the deficit in half, trailing 53-48 before Adams had five points in an 8-2 spurt as R-MC took a 61-50 advantage with 8:50 remaining. The Hornets scored five straight to make it 61-55 before a three-pointer by Turner capped a 10-2 run to give the Yellow Jackets a 71-57 lead with three minutes left. Adams had two more layups and five points came from the free throw line as R-MC posted the 80-66 victory.

The Yellow Jacket defense held SU to 29% shooting from the floor (10-35) and 29 points in the second half.

R-MC had 24 assists on 30 field goals. Anthony had a season-high nine assists.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 with a 2 p.m. ODAC contest at Randolph.
