Quinn Helps #1 R-MC Volleyball Reach ODAC Title Match

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led all players with 19 assists and added eight digs as the top-seeded Randolph-Macon volleyball team defeated fifth-seeded Lynchburg 3-0 Friday evening in the semifinals of the 2017 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament in Crenshaw Gym.

The two-time defending champion Yellow Jackets (22-6) will face the winner of #2 Washington & Lee and #3 Virginia Wesleyan in the championship match on Saturday at 2 p.m.

R-MC posted wins of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-22 over the Hornets (17-8). The Yellow Jackets had an overall hit percentage of .211, compared to .076 for LC.

Senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) had nine kills, 32 total attacks and 12 digs for the victors. Junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) had nine kills, 21 total attacks, five service aces and five digs. Sophomore Angela Tender (Manassas, Va./Stone Bridge) tallied 13 assists. Senior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) had 11 digs, while senior Colleen Beaver (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) recorded five block assists.

The Yellow Jackets had early leads of 3-1 and 7-3 in Game 1. R-MC was up 17-15 before LC scored five straight to take a 20-17 lead. The Yellow Jackets scored eight of the final nine points to take a 25-21 decision. R-MC had a hit percentage of .250, compared to .091 for the Hornets. Clark had five kills and 10 total attacks, while Quinn registered six assists. McGilvery had six digs and Beaver recorded four block assists.

LC scored the first two points of the second game and held a 4-2 edge before R-MC scored four straight to take the lead for good. The Yellow Jackets had a 9-8 advantage before six straight points pushed the lead to 15-8. R-MC would maintain a comfortable margin and finish with a 25-15 win. The Yellow Jackets hit .207, while LC hit -.069. McGilvery had 12 total attacks, while sophomore Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va./James River) paced the victors with four kills. Quinn had six assists, while McGilvery and Sallade both recorded four digs.

In the deciding third game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 7-4 lead. The Hornets responded and took an 11-10 advantage before R-MC scored five straight and took the lead for good at 15-11. LC cut the deficit to two at 17-15 before four consecutive points gave the Yellow Jackets a 21-15 edge. The Hornets made it a one-point game at 23-22 before R-MC tallied the final two points to take a 25-22 victory. McGilvery had five kills and 13 total attacks. Sallade recorded five digs, while Quinn registered seven assists and Tender added five.
