McGilvery is Masterful as R-MC Volleyball Blanks No. 24 Berry

ATLANTA - Senior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) recorded 11 kills, 28 total attacks and 15 digs as the Randolph-Macon volleyball swept 24th-ranked Berry 3-0 this afternoon at the Emory National Invitational.

The Yellow Jackets (20-4) posted wins of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-23 over the Vikings (23-5), the top-ranked team in the South Atlantic Region. R-MC stands fourth in the region. The Yellow Jackets have won six straight and 16 of their past 17 matches.

Sophomore Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va./James River) had 10 kills, 27 total attacks and five assisted blocks for the victors. Sophomore Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) added 11 kills, 32 total attacks and six digs.

Senior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) paced the Yellow Jackets with 19 digs. Senior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) had 18 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Angela Tender (Manassas, Va./Stone Bridge) tallied 12 assists and seven digs for R-MC.

Berry bolted to a 9-4 lead in Game 1 before an 11-3 run by the Yellow Jackets gave them a 15-12 advantage. The Vikings scored two points to pull within one before R-MC scored 10 of the final 14 points to claim a 25-18 win.

The Vikings scored the first point of the second game before the Yellow Jackets scored six straight and 11 of the next 12 points to take a commanding 11-2 lead. Berry fought back and cut the deficit to three at 23-20 before R-MC got two of the final three points to secure a 25-21 win. Wolfe and Colleen Beaver combined on a block on the final point for the Yellow Jackets.

In the third game, the teams stayed with two points of each other early until R-MC took a 9-6 advantage. The lead grew to six at 14-8 before Berry scored four straight to pull within two at 14-12. The Vikings held a 23-22 lead before the Yellow Jackets scored the final three points to take the game and the match. Sallade had a service ace on the final point.

R-MC had a hit percentage of .200, compared to .094 for Berry.

Randolph-Macon will play eighth-ranked Emory this evening at 7 p.m. Emory is ranked No. 2 in the South Atlantic Region.
