Clark, Wolfe Kill Double Digits In Win Over E&H

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./Riverheads) and sophomore Alexia Wolfe (Midlothian, Va. / James River) killed double-digit volleys as Randolph-Macon moved to 18-4 on the season and 10-0 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 win over Emory & Henry (25-12, 25-18, 25-22). The Wasps dropped to 5-21 and 2-8 in the ODAC.

R-MC started with the first six points of set one before giving up a single Wasps score. The run included a service ace by Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va. / Kettle Run). Randolph-Macon had complete control of the set, never allowing the Wasps to score more than three in a row. The Yellow Jackets completed the set as they started with six straight points to win 25-12. McGilvery led  the Yellow Jackets with four kills while Clark and fellow junior Emily Fitzwater (Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) scored three each. Sophomore Angela Tender (Manassas, Va. / Stone Bridge) scored two service aces in the set and senior Colleen Beaver (Fredericksburg, Va. / Massaponax) was involved in two of the team's three blocks. It was Fitzwater and Beaver's only set on the afternoon. The team hit .316 in the set, making just three errors on 38 attacks.

But Emory & Henry came storming back in the second set. The Wasps forced ties at 2-2 and 3-3 before R-MC slowly pulled away. Sophomore Bre Lockhart (Roanoke, Va. / Hidden Valley) found a service ace in a three point run that pushed the score to 11-8. R-MC put together another run of four which included a Clark service ace that pushed the score to 15-10. E&H got three in a row to take it to 16-14, but that was the closest the Wasps would come. R-MC finished the set 25-18.

The third set was even closer still. The Wasps took the quick 3-1 lead and pushed that lead to 6-3.  The two teams played closely until freshman Emma Young (Highland Park, Ill. / Highland Park) began her service. She turned the tables from an 8-6 E&H lead to become a lead for R-MC, 12-8. Emory & Henry continued to fight, taking the lead at 15-13. But during her service, senior Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) turned the tables a second time in the set to allow the Yellow Jackets to take the lead again to 18-15. The Wasps returned the favor, playing the game to a 19-19 tie and then a 21-19 lead. But R-MC would finish with the last six of seven and won the set 25-22.

Clark led all scorers on the day with 12 kills on 27 attacks. She added two blocks. Wolfe finished with the next most kills of any players on the court with 10 kills on 25 attacks with just four errors, making her hit percentage .240 for the afternoon. She added a block as well. Lockhart tallied six kills, as did McGilvery.

Defensively, Sallade led the team with 20 kills. She added eight assists, as did Young. Senior Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) led all Yellow Jackets with 10 assists in the match while Tender added seven. Quinn also had seven digs on the afternoon, while McGilvery found eight digs. Sophomore Emily Steffan (Salem, Va. / Salem) added four assists.

For the second night in a row, service was a big aspect of the Yellow Jackets' game. The team totaled seven service aces with Tender finishing with two. Lockhart, Young, McGilvery, Clark and senior Julia Stech (Chester, Va. / LC Bird) all finished with one to help the team get the upper hand.

At the net, the team finished with five blocks. Besides Beaver's two, Clark tallied two as well. Lockhart, Fitzwater and sophomores Kai Cunningham (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) and Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover) as well as freshman Becca Madgwick (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) each had one as well.

Randolph-Macon returns home for its final regular-season ODAC match of the season against Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. The night also marks senior night for the Yellow Jackets.
