R-MC Offense Rolls in 63-14 Football Win at Apprentice

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Randolph-Macon football team scored 56 points over the final 33 minutes of the game in a 63-14 non-conference victory at The Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets (5-2) have won three straight games, scoring at least 52 points in each contest.

Sophomore Deandre Gill (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming) pulled in five receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns to pace the R-MC offense.

The Yellow Jackets went three-and-out on their first possession, but found the end zone on their second drive. R-MC took over on its 38 and moved 62 yards in nine plays, with sophomore Burke Estes (Wilmington N.C./New Hanover) hitting junior Sean McDonald (Boyce, Va./Clarke County) on a three-yard scoring pass to put the Yellow Jackets up 7-0 with 3:06 left in the opening quarter.

Late in the second period, the Builders (1-6) registered the equalizing score to make it 7-7 with 2:53 left in the half. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the touchdown had Apprentice kicking off from its 20. The kick went out of bounds, giving the ball to the Yellow Jackets at midfield. Senior JP Redmond (Midlothian, Va./Monacan) scored from two yards out on the fourth play of the drive as R-MC took a 14-7 advantage with 1:41 remaining in the half. The Yellow Jackets used their timeouts and got the ball on their own 46 with 12.6 seconds left in the quarter. Estes hit junior Harrison Smith (Wilmington, N.C./Hoggard) on a nine-yard pass and connected with Gill on a 45-yard TD pass on the final play of the half as R-MC held a 21-7 lead at intermission.

R-MC scored on its first possession of the third quarter as the advantage ballooned to 28-7. Estes hit Gill on a 29-yard scoring strike on a fourth-down play. The Builders answered with a TD of their own to make it 28-14 midway through the period. R-MC had another short field and junior Eric Hoy (Clayton N.C./Clayton) scored from two yards out to give the visitors a 35-14 advantage late in the third quarter.

Sophomore Keshaun Butler (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) picked off a pass and sophomore Marcus Bazala (Richmond, Va./Hanover) scored from two-yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter to give the visitors a 42-14 lead. Following a Builder punt, scored from seven yards out as R-MC took a 49-14 lead with 11:07 left in the contest. Freshman Jordan Hall (Henrico, Va./Hermitage) had a two-yard TD run and sophomore Billy Mullen (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) returned a fumble 31 yards for a score as the Yellow Jackets claimed the 63-14 victory.

Estes completed 15 of 18 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns. Redmond rushed 11 times for 68 yards and one score.

Senior Ryan Burns (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) paced the defense with six tackles, including one for loss.

Randolph-Macon returns to ODAC action on Saturday, Oct. 28 with a 1 p.m. home contest against Washington & Lee on Day Field for Homecoming.
