Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Gabby Nelson (Clover, Va./Halifax County) led all players with seven shots as the Randolph-Macon women's soccer team was nipped by St. Mary's 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the R-MC Soccer Field.
The Yellow Jackets (0-1-1) held a 21-17 advantage in shots. Sophomore TaylorAnne Barry (Earlysville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) added six shots for R-MC.
In the first period, R-MC outshot SMC 10-8 and the match remained scoreless. Junior goalkeeper Lindsay Zachman (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) had three saves for the Yellow Jackets.
In the second stanza, the Seahawks (1-1-0) broke through in the 54th minute as Jenna Pastel sent a long pass forward and Gillian Sawyer finished from 10 yards out to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets put pressure on the remainder of the game, but could not come up with the equalizer.
Freshman Christina Newman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) recorded four saves in the second half. Sophomore Maddie Burns (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) also made a defensive save on the goal line for the R-MC defense.
The Yellow Jackets had a 7-2 edge on corner kicks, including 5-1 in the second half.
Randolph-Macon returns to action next weekend in the UMW Classic in Fredericksburg, Va. The Yellow Jackets face Maryville on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. and Coast Guard on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m.
