Box Score ASHLAND, Va.—Senior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va. / Patrick Henry) recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 27 points and 15 rebounds and senior Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) added 20 points and three assists as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan 72-71 Tuesday evening in Crenshaw Gymnasium.
There were 16 lead changes and nine ties in a game that came down to the final two minutes.
The Yellow Jackets (10-11, 6-7 ODAC) faced a 48-45 deficit to begin the fourth quarter. Senior Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) added two free throws before the Marlins (8-13, 6-7 ODAC) nailed a three-pointer to hold a four-point lead with 9:14 to play. The Yellow Jackets tied the score at 53-all with 7:51 to play but would not gain the lead until 3:07. The Marlins used an 8-3 spurt to maintain a 61-56 advantage with 5:08 on the clock before the Yellow Jackets compiled a 6-0 run to gain the lead. R-MC held a 65-63 lead before the Marlins scored a layup to tie the score for the fifth time at 1:50. The score was tied four more times down the stretch through 70-all with 0:20 remaining. The Marlins added a free throw to regain the lead before Anderson scored a layup off a pass from Hester with 0:08 to play to give the Yellow Jackets a 72-71 advantage. Virginia Wesleyan missed the final shot at the buzzer and Anderson grabbed the rebound to seal the ODAC win for R-MC.
The Yellow Jackets held their largest lead of four points with 8:06 to play in the first quarter. The Marlins tied the score and gained the advantage for the rest of the quarter to find their largest lead of the game at 19-11 with 1:39 to play. The Marlins maintained a 19-14 lead at the end of the first stanza.
Virginia Wesleyan extended its lead to six at 24-18 with 7:18 remaining. The Yellow Jackets used a 13-4 spurt to hold a 31-28 advantage with 3:28 to play until halftime. The Marlins cut their deficit to one-point before R-MC regained a three-point advantage at 2:07. The visitors ended the second quarter on a 4-0 run to hold a 36-35 lead at the break.
Senior Lauren Vugteveen (Midlothian, Va. / Amelia Academy) scored the first layup of the third quarter to put R-MC back in the lead. The Marlins tied the score at 37-all with 7:30 to play. The score was tied again at 39-all before Virginia Wesleyan took the lead for the remainder of the quarter with a 3-0 spurt. The Yellow Jackets never trailed by more than three-points during the final five minutes and faced a 48-45 deficit at the end of the quarter.
Hester paced R-MC with nine points and five assists.
Junior Taylor Intermill (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) added five points and sophomore Kareema Conteh (Riverdale, Md. / Parkdale) added four points.
Randolph-Macon returns to action on the road for its final non-conference game of the year against Gallaudet on Thursday, Feb. 11 before returning home on Saturday, Feb. 13 for an ODAC contest against Randolph at 2 p.m.
