Anderson Breaks ODAC Career Rebound Record as #7 R-MC Tops #10 SU 78-53

ASHLAND, Va. - Senior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va./Patrick Henry) scored 29 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, breaking the ODAC career rebounding record, as the seventh-seeded Randolph-Macon women's basketball team defeated No. 11 Shenandoah 78-53 Monday evening in the opening round of the 2016 ODAC Championship in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (14-12) advance to the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament to face second-seeded Guilford on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Salem Civic Center.

Anderson snared a missed free throw with 4:50 left in the fourth quarter to give her 15 in the game and 1,047 in her career, passing the previous record of Jessica Hunsinger of Washington and Lee. Anderson finished with 17 caroms and 1,049 career boards.

Offensively, Anderson went 14 for 19 from the floor and tied the ODAC postseason record for field goals made in a game. She recorded her 18th double-double of the season and now has 1,697 career points, third in program history.

Anderson had a pair of follows as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 12-4 lead 6:15 into the contest. The Hornets (7-19) cut the deficit to two at 14-12 with one minute left in the first period. Anderson hit a short jumper with 22 seconds left as R-MC led 16-12 after one quarter.

A layup by Anderson gave the Yellow Jackets a 20-14 lead one minute into the second period. SU scored seven straight to take its first lead at 21-20 with seven minutes left in the quarter. The Hornets built a five-point lead at 27-22 with 3:40 left in the period. Senior Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) hit a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left to cap a 6-2 run as R-MC trailed 29-28 at intermission. Anderson had 10 points and nine rebounds in the first half. The Yellow Jackets held a 23-16 advantage on the boards in the first half and pulled down 11 offensive rebounds.

R-MC outscored SU 26-8 in the third period. The Yellow Jackets scored the first eight points of the quarter and used an 18-2 run to take a 46-31 advantage. Anderson had six layups and 12 points in the run. R-MC had 10 field goals in the period, all layups, and went 6 for 7 from the free throw line to take a 54-37 lead into the final quarter.

The Yellow Jackets started the fourth period on a 13-4 spurt to take a 67-41 lead with 7:35 left in the contest. R-MC's largest lead was 27 at 76-49 with three minutes left in the contest on its way to the 78-53 victory.

Senior Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had 13 points, while senior Lauren Vugteveen (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) added 11 for the Yellow Jackets. Livermon moved into ninth on R-MC's career scoring list with 1,369 points.

Hester had six assists and moved into a tie for third in R-MC history with 412 career assists.

Erin French paced the Hornets with 17 points and eight boards.
