Box Score WASHINGTON, DC—Senior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, Va. / Patrick Henry) registered her 15th double-double of the season and led all scorers with 26 points and 12 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team defeated Gallaudet 73-57 Thursday evening.
Anderson joined two other R-MC players in double figures. Seniors Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan) and Lauren Vugteveen (Midlothian, Va. / Amelia Academy) recorded 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Yellow Jackets (11-11) held an early 5-0 advantage which expanded to 9-4 with 6:10 to play in the first quarter. The Bison (10-10) used a 4-0 run to pull within three points at 11-8. Anderson scored a layup with 1:54 remaining and then added a free throw on the next possession as R-MC held a 14-10 lead at the end of the first stanza.
The Bison used a 5-2 spurt to cut their deficit to one-point at 16-15 with 8:23 remaining in the second quarter. Junior Taylor Intermill (Fairfax, Va. / Fairfax) nailed a three-pointer followed by a layup from sophomore Teal Reynolds (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls) as the Yellow Jackets extended their lead back to six points at 21-15. The Bison compiled a 12-2 run to steal the lead from R-MC and maintain a four-point advantage through 29-25. R-MC responded with another 5-0 spurt with help from Livermon and Anderson before the Bison scored the final layup of the quarter to grab a 31-30 lead at halftime.
Anderson led R-MC at the break with 11 points and six rebounds. Livermon and Intermill added six and five points, respectively.
The Yellow Jackets outscored the Bison 22-9 in the third quarter. Senior Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) grabbed an offensive rebound and passed the ball inside to Vugteveen to put the Yellow Jackets back on top by one-point to begin the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets used a 10-2 spurt to retain a 42-33 advantage with 5:28 remaining. Vugteveen tallied four of the ten points during run. Anderson stole the ball from the Bison and made a layup on a fast break to find a 13-point lead for R-MC. On the next possession for the Yellow Jackets, Reynolds grabbed an offensive board and scored the putback to put R-MC ahead 52-39. The Bison tallied the final point to face a 52-40 deficit at the end of the third quarter.
R-MC started the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to find its largest lead of the game at 61-40 with 8:43 remaining. Anderson tallied a three-point play along with back-to-back treys from Livermon during the spurt. The Bison followed up with a 10-2 run to pull within 13-points with 6:02 to play. Reynolds was fouled on a made layup and tallied the free throw to give R-MC a 16-point lead at 68-52 with 3:29 to play. The Yellow Jackets maintained their lead through the end of the quarter to claim the 73-57 victory.
Vugteveen added seven rebounds on the night and Intermill led the team with five assists.
Two players moved into the top-five on the R-MC All-Time list with their performance tonight. Anderson is fifth with 1,597 points and Hester tied Holly Cope at No.5 All-Time with 389 career assists.
Randolph-Macon returns to action at home on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. against Randolph.
