Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon volleyball team claimed the 2016 ODAC Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 win over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon. R-MC won its second consecutive ODAC title and will advance to the NCAA tournament with the automatic bid.
Freshman Miranda Hall (Mechanicsville, Va./ Hanover) was one of the standout performers for the Yellow Jackets. Hall led both teams in both kills (15) and points (15.5). She had a. 345 kill percentage in the championship game.
R-MC would win the first two points of the championship off of two service aces from junior Julia Stech (Chester, Va./ LC Bird). Washington and Lee and R-MC then battled closely in the first set. With R-MC trailing 21-19, it would go on to win six straight points to take the first set.
R-MC then jumped out to an early lead in set two. The Yellow Jackets led 18-6 and would go on to win set two 25-12, ending with a kill from junior Rebecca McGilvery (Warrenton, Va./ Kettle Run). She crushed nine kills and added eight digs and one block.
In the third and final set, with R-MC on the verge of an NCAA automic bid and an ODAC Championship, the team continued the momentum from the second set and jumped out to a dominating 20-9 lead. R-MC would win the championship point on a service error from W&L.
R-MC put up 18 blocks on the night, compared to W&L's 14. Junior Colleen Beaver (Fredericksburg, Va./ Massaponax) led the Yellow Jackets with six block assists, while sophomore Mariah Clark (Stuarts Draft, Va./ Riverheads) was in second with five on the day.
In the 2016 ODAC Tournament, R-MC failed to drop a set. R-MC beat Roanoke, Bridgewater and W&L by a score of 3-0 to take the title.
Randolph-Macon (23-7, 11-0 ODAC) will be heading to the tournament for the second time in a row, after losing in the Elite 8 in 2015. The selection show will take place on Monday, November 7 to determine regional hosts.
