Bagley, Jones Guide R-MC to Sweep of Gettysburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Harley Jones (Broadnax, Va./Brunswick) went 4 for 7 with two doubles and three RBI, and fellow rookie Nelda Bagley (Kenbridge, Va./Central) tossed a pair of complete games as the Randolph-Macon softball team swept a doubleheader from Gettysburg Sunday afternoon at the R-MC Softball Field.

The Yellow Jackets (20-10) took the opener 7-1 and rallied with five in the sixth to post a 5-2 victory in Game 2.

Senior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews) had an RBI single and scored in a three-run first for R-MC. Jones added an RBI double in the third as the Yellow Jackets took a 4-0 advantage. After the Bullets (25-9) tallied one in the fourth, R-MC put up three more in the sixth. Junior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) and Jones both had run-scoring single for the Yellow Jackets.

Jones finished with two hits and two RBI, while Gilman scored three times and Jarvis twice.

Bagley allowed four hits and a run in seven innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Gettysburg got single runs in the fourth and sixth to take a 2-0 advantage in the nightcap before R-MC rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Amanda Sopko (Skippers, Va./Greensville) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Gilman. After a wild pitch moved Gilman to third, Jarvis walked and stole second. Jones doubled to left to plate Gilman with the tying run. Jarvis and Jones both scored on passed balls to give R-MC a 4-2 advantage. Freshman Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge) singled and scored on a passed ball later in the frame to make it 5-2.

The Bullets brought the tying run to the plate with one away in the seventh, but a fielder's choice and a flyout ended the contest.

Jones went 2 for 3 with one run and one RBI.

Bagley (14-4) scattered 10 hits and allowed two runs with four walks and six strikeouts.

Randolph-Macon will head to Salem next weekend to participate in the ODAC Championship. The Yellow Jackets reached the title game a season ago for the first time in program history.
