Box Score ASHLAND, Va.—Junior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, VA / Patrick Henry) registered her 14th double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 boards as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team defeated Hollins 79-41 in ODAC action Saturday afternoon.
Senior Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, VA /J.R. Tucker) led all scorers with 19 points for the Yellow Jackets (17-3, 10-2 ODAC) while sophomores Stephanie Staples (Mechanicsville, VA / Atlee) and Marisha Berry (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) tallied nine points.
R-MC jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead with 16:28 remaining in the first half. Hollins (2-19, 0-12 ODAC) cut the lead to four points at 12:52 but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 21-4 run to stretch their advantage to double digits at 36-15 with 4:21 to go until halftime. Parsons knocked down a three-pointer at 1:55 and R-MC would go to halftime with a 44-24 advantage. The Yellow Jackets held Hollins to 30.0% shooting from the floor in the first half.
The Yellow Jackets opened the second half with a 6-0 run to give them a 50-24 advantage but Hollins responded with a 5-0 run to cut R-MC's lead back to 21 points. After the rally from Hollins, the Yellow Jackets put together a 17-2 spurt, which included back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore Taylor Intermill (Fairfax, VA / Fairfax), to hold a 36-point lead with just under 10 minutes left. A layup by Jordan Persinger from Hollins with 7:46 remaining cut the Yellow Jacket's lead to 30-points at 67-37. In the final seven minutes, R-MC stretched its lead with a 12-4 run to claim a 79-41 victory.
Randolph-Macon outscored Hollins 43-16 from the bench. Junior Lauren Vugteveen (Midlothian, VA / Amelia Academy) tallied six points and three rebounds in 19 minutes for R-MC and freshman Kareema Conteh (Riverdale, MD / Parkdale) recorded eight points, three boards and two steals. Freshman Amber Lee (Rockville, VA/ Patrick Henry) tallied three points and Freshman Teal Reynolds (Sterling, VA / Potomac Falls) added two points for the Yellow Jackets.
Junior Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, VA / Cape Henry Collegiate) led the team with six assists while junior Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) tallied four assists.
R-MC outrebounded Hollins 40-33. Staples tallied six boards while senior Caroline Young (Burke, VA/ Lake Braddock Secondary) added four rebounds for R-MC.
Jewellanna Parfitt led Hollins with eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets are on the road for an ODAC contest at Washington and Lee on Tuesday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m.
