Box Score FROSTBURG, Md. – Freshman Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) scored a season-high 18 points as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored Frostburg State 84-74 Sunday afternoon on the second day of FSU's Tournament, giving Josh Merkel his first career victory as a head coach.
Williams had scored just two points in the first two games for the Yellow Jackets (1-2). He went 5 for 8 from the floor, hit his only three-point attempt, and sank seven of nine free throws. Williams also had four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 33 minutes.
Williams was one of four Yellow Jackets to score in double figures. Junior Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) tallied 16 off the bench, while freshman Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) added 14 and senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy chipped in 12. Moore was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Moore and Nowell hit layups out of the gate to give R-MC a quick 4-0 lead. The lead was four at 11-7 before the Bobcats (0-3) used a 10-6 spurt to knot the score at 17 with 10:45 left in the first period. Sophomore Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) hit a jumper with four minutes remaining to give the visitors a 29-24 advantage. FSU cut into the deficit to trail 37-35 at intermission. Williams put up 13 in the first half to lead all scorers.
FSU tied the score at 43 before a three-pointer by Taylor put R-MC ahead for good at 46-43 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Taylor scored 10 in a 12-3 run as the Yellow Jackets led 55-46 with 11:40 left. R-MC was up by six at 67-61 with 5:15 left before a layup by Taylor and six straight free throws by Nowell made up an 8-0 run to give R-MC a 75-61 lead with two minutes remaining. The margin would not go below eight the rest of the way as the Yellow Jackets posted the 84-74 win.
The Bobcats made five more field goals than R-MC, but the Yellow Jackets hit 29 of 36 from the free throw line (.806), while FSU was 8 for 11 (.727) from the charity stripe. The Bobcats were whistled for 26 fouls, compared to 12 for R-MC.
Randolph-Macon returns to Crenshaw Gym on Tuesday, Nov. 24, for a 7 p.m. contest against Christopher Newport.
