Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team opened the 2015-16 campaign with an 83-66 loss to Mary Washington Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Gym.
Moore hit four field goals and went 7 for 10 from the free throw line for the Yellow Jackets (0-1). Four of his 10 boards were offensive rebounds. It was his second career double-double.
The game was tied at 16 seven minutes into the contest before the Eagles (1-0) scored seven straight to take a 23-16 lead. R-MC answered with seven in a row as junior Jamie Wilson (West Point, Va./West Point) hit a three-pointer, Moore sank two free throws and freshman Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) to level the score at 23 midway through the first half. UMW tallied six straight to lead 29-23 before taking a 42-35 lead at intermission. Wilson had eight points in the first half, while Moore recorded six points and five rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
R-MC cut the deficit to five at 44-39 early in the second half before the Eagles scored 10 straight to take a 54-39 lead with 15:36 left in the contest. The lead grew to as much as 22 (78-56) before finishing 83-66.
Wilson finished with 10 points and three assists. Sophomore Rip Engel (New Town, Pa./Life Center Academy) led all players with six assists.
Randolph-Macon will play in Frostburg State's tournament next weekend. The Yellow Jackets face Mt. St. Vincent on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. R-MC will meet either Hood or FSU on Sunday.
