Livermon, Anderson Lead R-MC past Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C.Junior Hannah Livermon (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) led all scorers with 24 points and nine rebounds and junior Katie Anderson (Beaverdam, VA / Patrick Henry) tallied 18 points and nine boards as the Randolph-Macon women's basketball team defeated Gallaudet 71-51 Saturday afternoon.

Senior Sarah Parsons (Glen Allen, VA / J.R. Tucker) recorded 11 points and five steals for the Yellow Jackets (8-2), while sophomore Marisha Berry (Powhatan, VA / Powhatan) added eight points.

An early steal in the first half by Anderson at 18:15 allowed the Yellow Jackets to hold a three-point lead. Gallaudet (2-4) traded baskets and the lead. A jumper by sophomore Stephanie Staples (Mechanicsville, VA / Atlee) with 11:25 remaining tied the score at 13. Parsons nailed a three-pointer at 8:16 to open up a five-point lead for R-MC. The Bison tied the score at 22 with 5:13 remaining. Livermon nailed a three-pointer at 2:13 bringing the score to 27-25. The score would be tied two more times as the teams went into intermission even at 29-29.

Anderson scored a layup with 19:09 remaining in the second half to give the Yellow Jackets a two-point advantage. The Bison fought back and tied the score at 31-31 with 18:21 left to play. The Yellow Jackets and the Bison never led by more than two points in the first seven minutes of the second half. A layup by junior Lauren Vugteveen (Midlothian, VA / Amelia Academy) with 14:35 remaining tied the score at 37-37. The Yellow Jackets capped a 16-2 spurt with a layup by Parsons bringing the score to 51-39 with 8:52 in the second half. The lead continued to expand as Livermon knocked down a trey to give the Yellow Jackets a 17-point advantage with just under 4:30 to play. A steal by Staples and a foul by Gallaudet put Berry at the line with 0:26 to play. Berry knocked down the final two points of the game from the free throw line to give the Yellow Jackets a 20-point victory.

Freshman Amber Lee (Rockville, VA / Patrick Henry) chipped in seven rebounds and junior Khajae Hester (Virginia Beach, VA / Cape Henry Collegiate) paced R-MC with seven assists.

The Yellow Jackets return to the court at 7p.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Lynchburg College for an ODAC contest.
