Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) led all players with 18 kills as Randolph-Macon lost a close four-game match to undefeated Mary Washington Wednesday evening in Crenshaw Gymnasium.
The Eagles (5-0) took the opening game 25-21 before the Yellow Jackets (2-2) evened the match with a 25-16 win in Game 2. UMW was able to post a 25-23 win in the third game and finished with a 25-22 victory in Game 4.
Lowers registered 52 total attacked and also had 13 digs.
Freshman Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) led R-MC with 17 assists, while junior Riley Martin (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) chipped in 14 assists.
Freshman Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) paced the Yellow Jackets with 16 digs, while junior Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) added 14 digs.
R-MC held leads in each of the four games. The Yellow Jackets led 14-11 in the first game before the Eagles scored seven straight points to take control at 18-14 before winning 25-21. In Game 2, R-MC held a 14-11 advantage before five consecutive points pushed the lead to eight on its way to a 25-16 decision. In the third game, UMW scored the first four points before R-MC tallied 10 of the next 15 points for a 10-9 edge. The teams stayed with one point of each other before the Yellow Jackets took a 19-17 lead. The Eagles scored eight of the final 12 points, including the final three points of a 25-22 win. R-MC was ahead 18-16 in the fourth game before a 9-4 spurt by UMW closed out the match.
The Yellow Jackets will play in UMW's tournament this weekend in Fredericksburg, facing Manchester and Averett on Friday before tangling with Christopher Newport and Eastern, both undefeated and nationally-ranked, on Saturday.
