Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon football team scored the final 20 points of the contest to defeat Sewanee 34-20 Saturday afternoon at Day Field in front of a crowd of 2,215 Family Weekend fans.
The Yellow Jackets (2-1) trailed 20-14 in the third quarter before a 54-yard kickoff return by sophomore Deshaun Rogers (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) put R-MC on the Sewanee 28-yard line. Senior quarterback Zac Naccarato (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) scored on a 12-yard run to tie the game and sophomore Seth Yurgel (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) booted the extra point to put the Yellow Jackets ahead to stay with 6:20 remaining in the third period.
After the R-MC defense held the Tigers (1-2) to a three-and-out on their next possession, Naccarato snuck in from one yard out to make it a 27-20 contest with 1:18 left in the third period.
Sewanee moved to the R-MC 39, but a 4th-and-12 pass fell incomplete with 11:30 to go in the contest.
The Yellow Jackets put together one of their best drives of the season, going 61 yards in 13 plays and eating up 8:16 on the clock. Junior running back John Byrd (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) bulled in from a yard out to push the lead to 34-20 with just 3:14 left in the contest.
Naccarato completed nine of 14 passes for 119 yards and a pair of scores. He ran the ball six times for 38 yards and two touchdowns.
Byrd carried the ball 24 times for 110 yards and a score.
The Tigers scored the first 10 points of the contest before Naccarato hit sophomore tight end Steven Quinn (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) with a 15-yard scoring strike with 6:30 to go in the first half. Sewanee kicked a late field goal and took a 13-7 lead at intermission.
Senior halfback Henry Kuhn (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) snared a nine-yard TD pass from Naccarato early in the second half as R-MC took its first lead at 14-13.
Junior safety Eric Long (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) led the Yellow Jackets with 12 tackles, including eight solo stops. Sophomore linebacker Michael Farry (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) recorded 10 tackles.
R-MC is off next weekend before beginning conference play on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. at Emory & Henry.
