ASHLAND, Va. – The Randolph-Macon men's tennis team won its third straight match with a 7-2 victory over Roanoke College Saturday afternoon at the Banks Tennis Center.
In doubles, senior Michael Baxter (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) and junior Ryan Byrd (Toano, Va./Warhill) rolled at the Number 1 position over Joey Ross and Matt Kessler 8-3. At the Number 3 position, juniors Ira Usry (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) and Connor Hoerr (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) cruised to an 8-2 victory over Lewis Young and Chris Teeple .
In singles, the Yellow Jackets were led by Hoerr and Baxter, winning 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively. At the Number 5 position, freshman Brantley Stein (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) rallied to win the first set tiebreaker, before crushing Roanoke's Lewis Young in the second set 6-1. Usry and sophomore John Adam (Vienna, Va./James Madison) also scored easy wins, winning 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively. Byrd lost a tough, three-set decision to Joey Ross at the Number 1 position 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.
Over the past two seasons, the Yellow Jackets are 11-1 at home.
R-MC looks to extend its winning streak when it hosts Guilford College on Monday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m. at the Banks Tennis Center.
