R-MC Rallies to Win at UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Randolph-Macon men's basketball team closed the game on a 28-13 run to pull out a 63-58 decision at Mary Washington Sunday afternoon at the Anderson Center.

The Yellow Jackets (1-0) led 35-32 at intermission before the Eagles (0-2) scored the first 13 points of the second half to take a 45-35 lead with 11:45 remaining in the contest. Senior Evan Jackson (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) made a layup 15 seconds later to snap the scoreless streak for R-MC. Senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) hit a three-pointer with 5:55 left to pull the Yellow Jackets to within three at 51-48. A technical foul was called on the UMW bench and Hamilton hit a free throw to make it a two-point contest. Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) had a follow with 5:30 left to knot the score at 51-51.

Hassell hit a free throw with 2:14 left to give the Yellow Jackets a 54-53 edge. He missed the second and Jackson put in the follow to give R-MC a 56-53 advantage. Over the final two minutes, Hassell hit two layups and senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) sank three free throws to make the final 63-58.

A three-pointer by senior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) and a layup by junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) gave R-MC a quick 5-0 lead in the first minute. UMW used a 10-3 spurt to take its first lead at 10-8. The Yellow Jackets trailed 15-12 before a 10-2 run gave R-MC a 22-17 edge with eight minutes left in the period. The Eagles put together a 10-1 run to take a 27-23 advantage with 4:45 remaining in the period. The Yellow Jackets had another 10-2 spurt to take a 33-29 edge with less than a minute left. Senior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) made a layup just before the horn to give R-MC a 35-32 lead at the break. Sullivan led the Yellow Jackets with seven points in the first period.

Hamilton led Randolph-Macon with 13 points, while Hassell added 11 with five rebounds. Badger had 10 points and six assists, while Sullivan put in 10 points as well.

R-MC held a 36-28 advantage on the boards, while both teams committed 13 turnovers.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. at Christopher Newport.
