Kaopua, Byrd Both Rush for over 100 Yards as R-MC Falls at E&H

EMORY, Va. - Sophomore Dom Kaopua (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) rushed for 149 yards and junior John Byrd (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) gained 120 on the ground as the Randolph-Macon football team was outscored 38-28 at Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon in the ODAC opener for both teams.

The Yellow Jackets fell to 2-2 overall, 0-1 in the ODAC, while the Wasps remained undefeated at 4-0 overall, 1-0 in the ODAC.

An interception ended R-MC's first drive, giving E&H the ball on its 37. The Wasps drove 47 yards in 14 plays, connecting on a 33-yard field goal to take an early 3-0 lead midway through the first period.

Early in the second quarter, Kaopua rumbled 39 yards for the game's first touchdown, giving the Yellow Jackets a 7-3 advantage.

Late in the first half, E&H faced a fourth-and-seven on the R-MC 31. The Yellow Jackets picked off a pass in the end zone, but R-MC was flagged for pass interference. The Wasps connected on a 16-yard TD pass on the next play to reclaim the lead at 10-7 with 45 seconds left in the half. That score would hold into intermission.

E&H scored on its first three possessions of the third quarter to take a 31-7 lead.

Byrd registered a 10-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter for R-MC to make it 31-14 with 9:37 left.

The Wasps recovered a fumbled punt and scored with four minutes left to make it 38-14.

R-MC drove 67 yards on its next possession as senior quarterback Zac Naccarato (Spotsylvania, Va./Riverbend) hit senior wide receiver Mike Doe (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) on a 25-yard scoring strike as the Yellow Jackets trailed 38-21 with 1:12 remaining.

After recovering the onside kick, Doe caught a 33-yard TD pass to make it 38-28 with 46 seconds left.

R-MC recovered a second onside kick, but a fumble ended the final drive for the Yellow Jackets.

Doe finished with nine catches for 114 yards and two scores.

Sophomore Connor Lane (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) led the R-MC defense with nine tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and one pass breakup. Junior Eric Long (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) and sophomore Marcus Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) both had seven tackles for the Yellow Jackets.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at Day Field against ODAC-rival Catholic.
