Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) led all players with 16 kills and 52 total attacks as the Randolph-Macon volleyball team dropped a four-game match to No. 13 Christopher Newport Friday evening.
The Captains (25-3) took the opening game 25-22 before the Yellow Jackets (17-8) took Game 2 by a score of 25-20. CNU eked out a 28-26 win in the third game before taking the finale 25-11.
CNU took a quick 6-0 lead in the opener before R-MC fought back to knot the score at 13-13. The Captains again pushed the advantage to 18-14 before the Yellow Jackets rallied to tie it at 21-21. CNU scored four of the final five points to secure Game 1.
R-MC sprung to a 7-3 lead in the second game before CNU rallied to take a 14-13 advantage. The score was tied at 19-19 before the Yellow Jackets tallied six of the final seven points to even the match at one game apiece.
The third game was a thriller. R-MC built a 13-7 lead before CNU fought back to take a 24-22 lead. Lowers had a pair of kills to even the count at 24-24. The Yellow Jackets had a 26-25 lead, but the Captains scored the final three points to take a 2-1 lead.
Game 4 was close early, as CNU held a narrow 9-8 advantage. The Captains would score 16 of the final 19 points to secure the match win.
Junior Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) recorded 12 kills, 37 total attacks and 15 digs for R-MC. Freshman Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) registered 19 assists and nine digs. Junior Riley Martin (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) added 10 assists and eight digs. Freshman Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) led all players with 22 digs.
The Yellow Jackets conclude their ODAC season on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at Bridgewater.
