Box Score 2 ASHLAND, VA - Randolph-Macon Softball (17-2 / 2-0 ODAC) extended their winning streak to 13 games with a pair of wins over Mary Washington Thursday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets shutout the Eagles 2-0 in game one and posted a 9-3 victory in game two.
R-MC's 17 wins ties the program record for best starting win total with the 2008 squad that posted a 17-3 record through 20 games. The Yellow Jackets will host Emory & Henry on Saturday for a 1:00 doubleheader.
After four and a half scoreless innings in game one, Randolph-Macon broke through with a run in the fifth. Amanda Sopko led off with a bunt single and advanced to second when Carolyn Gilbertson laid down a sacrifice bunt. The sophomore outfielder then stole third and scored on a Lacey Berry's RBI single to left.
Mary Washington threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out. But, senior Heather Lewis came on in relief and induced two groundball outs to keep the Eagles off the board.
Jenna Best stepped to the plate in the bottom half and belted a solo homerun to straight away center to put the Yellow Jackets up 2-0.
Lewis then retired Mary Washington in order in the seventh to complete the 2-0 shutout victory.
The freshman lefty Best tossed a gem in the circle, scattering six hits over five and a third with three strikeouts for her second win of the season. Lewis tallied her first save on the year.
Madison Gilman paced R-MC at the plate going 2-for-3. Best finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Randolph-Macon bats came to life early in game two when Gilman doubled home Lewis in the bottom of the first.
Mary Washington answered in the second when Stephanie Asselanis crossed the plate on an R-MC error.
The tie would be short lived as Berry ripped a two run, bases loaded single to center. Lewis followed with an RBI groundout to extend the Yellow Jackets lead to 4-1.
After a Katie Woody single put two runners on the in the third, Sopko ripped a shot over the fence in left and put Randolph-Macon on top 7-1.
An RBI single from Woody in the seventh followed by a Sopko RBI sacrifice fly sealed the victory for the Yellow Jackets.
Gilman finished 3-for-3 with an RBI to push her team leading average to .473. Woody also added three hits and an RBI while Sopko went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs. Berry tallied a pair of hits and drove in two runs.
Kristen Dize improved to 5-1 on the season after allowing just one earned run over six innings. The senior struck out one and gave up no walks. Carly Alford struck out two and allowed one earned run in an inning of relief.
