Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, NC – Randolph-Macon Softball (15-2 / 2-0 ODAC) began conference play with a pair of wins over Guilford College 7-0 and 4-3 Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets return to action Thursday, March 21st when they host Mary Washington for a 3:00 doubleheader.
Heather Lewis went the distance in game one, allowing no runs and scattering six hits over seven innings. The senior also picked up the win in game two to improve her record to 10-1 on the season.
Madison Gilman opened up the Randolph-Macon offense in the top of the first. After Christa Simon led off with a single and Sharese Jarvis drew a walk, the freshman catcher ripped a double to plate both runners.
Lauryn Nanny and Heather Lewis drove in a run each in the second inning with doubles to push the advantage to 4-0 before Gilman knocked in her third run of the game with a single.
The Yellow Jackets tacked on another run in the third and Jarvis capped the scoring in the fourth with a run scoring sacrifice fly.
Simon and Nanny both finished the first game with multi-hit performances to join Gilman who went 2-for-4.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board early in game two as well when Simon crossed the plate on a Quakers' error and Jenna Best doubled home Sharese Jarvis.
Guilford answered quickly in the bottom of the first when Calli Pastor knocked a bases loaded double to right center. Two runners safely crossed the plate but the centerfielder Nanny kept it a tie game by throwing the third runner out at the plate to end the threat.
Randolph-Macon went back on top in the third when Jarvis drew a walk, stole second and then scored when Gilman reached on an error.
Two R-MC errors in the bottom of the fifth allowed GC to push across a run and tie the contest at 3-3.
Jarvis' patience at the plate resulted in a walk with one out in the top of the seventh. The sophomore proved quick on the base paths, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Gilman then stepped to the plate and grounded out to first, allowing Jarvis to score and put the Yellow Jackets in front 4-3.
The Quakers would not go quietly as they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh for their cleanup hitter Marty Wilcox. Wilcox hit a fly ball to right field which was caught by Amanda Sopko and fired to plate, cutting down Autumn Yoder for the final out of the game.
Randolph-Macon managed just two hits in the win but benefited from eight walks and three Guilford errors.
Kristen Dize allowed just two earned runs over four and two thirds innings with a strikeout in the no decision. Lewis scattered five hits over two and third innings to pick up the win.
