Box Score AMHERST, MA – Randolph-Macon Men's Basketball (21-10) saw their NCAA Tournament run come to an end Saturday afternoon after falling to Amherst 93-76. Amherst (27-2) took advantage of a 58-34 halftime edge on 64.7% shooting as they now advance to the Elite 8 round.
With the Yellow Jackets trailing 7-4 early in the first half, Lamar Giggetts knocked down a jumper with 16:59 to play to cut the Lord Jeffs' lead to just one.
Amherst then responded with 25-5 run which ended on a David Kalema with 10:14 to go in the first and gave the Lord Jeffs' a 32-11 advantage.
Randolph-Macon scored the next six points on buckets by Marcus Badger, Connor Sullivan and Andre Simon to pull the Yellow Jackets within 15 but a quick 10-0 run from Amherst extended the lead which would be 58-34 at half.
Amherst knocked down a staggering 10-of-15 three pointers in the first half while shooting 22-of-34 from the field.
After the Lord Jeff's went up by 30 on an Allen Williamson three point play, R-MC's Giggetts converted a layup to spark a 12-2 run for the Yellow Jackets. Joe Hassell capped the run after battling for an offensive rebound and sinking a layup with 13:38 to go to cut the advantage to 70-50.
Badger knocked down a shot with 2:34 to play to pull Randolph-Macon within 15 but that would be as close as they would get as Amherst knocked down 6-of-6 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the game.
R-MC shot 47.8% from the field and converted 3-of-9 three point attempts.
Simon led four Yellow Jackets in double digit scoring with 20 points and four rebounds. Giggetts had 18 and Sullivan chipped in for 16 on 6-of-10 shooting. Badger dished out seven assists while scoring ten points of his own.
Amherst shot 52.4% from the field including an 11-for-22 mark from the three point arc. The Lord Jeffs held a slim 37-35 edge on the glass and made 16-of-21 free throws.
Aaron Toomey scored a game high 25 points for Amherst while also hauling in six rebounds. Williamson added 15 points while Connor Green had 14 to lead five Lord Jeffs in double figures.
Randolph-Macon finishes the season with 21-10 overall record and an ODAC Championship. The Yellow Jackets under head coach Nathan Davis have now reached the NCAA Tournament a school record four consecutive times where they have posted seven wins and a Final Four appearance.
