Box Score 2 ASHLAND, VA – Randolph-Macon Softball (13-2) picked up a pair of wins over Catholic University (7-5) Friday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets took game one 6-5 and game two 8-4.
After the Yellow Jackets defense held the Cardinals scoreless in the first inning, short stop Sharese Jarvis hit a home run to give R-MC the early 1-0 advantage.
Cardinal's pitcher, Tori Marcavage, answered in the top of the second with a homer of her own to knot the score at 1-1.
Catholic broke out with a four run rally in the top of the third to go up 5-2 with four innings left to play.
The Yellow Jackets capitalized, starting off when Madison Gilman doubled to right center and advanced to third base on the throw to send home Jarvis bringing the score to 5-3. First baseman, Katie Woody, followed with a single up the middle to drive in Gilman to pull the Jackets within one.
In the sixth, Gilman doubled to left center and drove in two runners to give R-MC the 6-5 lead and the victory.
Jarvis paced the Yellow Jackets at the plate going 2-for-2 along with one RBI. Gilman drove in three runs and Woody added one RBI.
Heather Lewis earned the win on the mound for Randolph-Macon. The senior allowed five runs and struck out two batters in seven innings of work.
Tori Stockinger sparked the CUA attack in the first inning of game two when she doubled to center field to bring home Amy Laughner to give the Cardinals the 1-0 lead.
R-MC took the lead in the bottom of the third when Jenna Best hit a two run home-run over the right field fence.
The Yellow Jackets extended their edge to 4-1 in the bottom half of the fourth after Christa Simon doubled, scoring Sopko and Lewis singles, scoring Simon.
Gilman then singled to center field to score Lewis and Jarvis, to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-1 lead with two innings left.
Catholic rallied in the top of the sixth scoring three more runs, but that is as close and the Cardinals would get as the Yellow Jackets held on for the victory.
Kristen Dize recorded the win, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out one.
At the plate, Sopko finished 3-for-3 and three stolen bases. Gilman went 3-for-2 with a double and drove in two runs. Jarvis added two hits and two RBI for the Jackets.
Randolph-Macon Softball returns to action Sunday, March 17th when they take on Guilford at 1:30 p.m. for its first conference game.
