Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matt McCarthy hit a short jumper at the buzzer to lift Guilford over Randolph-Macon 73-71 in overtime Tuesday in ODAC action.
The Yellow Jackets (1-3, 0-1) tied the game with 34 seconds left in the extra period on a layup by junior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River). Hassell finished with a double-double, tallying 17 points and 10 rebounds.
R-MC had four score in double figures. Senior Andre Simon (Newport News, Va./Menchville) matched Hassell with 17, while sophomore Lamont Moore put in 13 and junior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) added 11.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first six points of the game for their largest lead of the contest. The Quakers (6-0, 2-0) used a 16-2 run to enjoy their biggest lead of the game at 16-8 with 12:36 left in the first period. R-MC used a 14-4 spurt to take a 22-20 edge with 9:29 to go in the half. Junior Trent Walker (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) hit a layup with 36 seconds to go until intermission to give the Yellow Jackets a 31-30 lead at the break.
Randolph-Macon pushed the lead to six at 51-45 on a free throw by Simon with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation. Guilford scored nine straight to take a 54-51 advantage with 6:27 left. The home team led 63-55 with 4:24 remaining before the Yellow Jackets scored the final eight points to force the extra period. Hassell hit a pair of free throws with 48 second to go to knot the score at 63-63. Sullivan missed a three-pointer with one second left to send the game to overtime.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Sunday, Dec. 1, with a 2 p.m. contest at Frostburg State.
