Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va--- Randolph-Macon College softball swept a double-header against Franklin & Marshall, 6-5 and 7-3 Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-2 on the season, while the Diplomats dropped to 0-4 on the year.
R-MC now leads the all-time series, 4-2 and has won four straight contests against F&M.
The Jackets took game one, 6-5 in eight innings after a late comeback by the Diplomats. R-MC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third off a three run homer by freshman Sharese Jarvis. Her team-best third jack of the year scored Lauryn Nanny and Paige Wernig, who both singled to start the inning. The Yellow Jackets would add another run in the bottom of the fifth when Laura Bauer ripped an RBI double to left center, scoring Jarvis.
Trailing 4-0 in their final at-bat, the Diplomats rallied, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. The rally was capped by an Alicia Kukoda single through the left side that scored three runs.
In extra innings, F&M would score first, taking a one run lead in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, junior Heather Lewis hit a two-run single to left centerfield that would score Carolyn Gilbertson and Kelly Beard to give R-MC the 6-5 win.
Bauer paced R-MC at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Jarvis finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and Lewis and Beard added two hits apiece.
Lewis picked up the win in relief for the Yellow Jackets, improving to 4-0 on the season. Beard started the game on the hill for R-MC, pitching 6.2 innings, while allowing just five hits and three earned runs and striking out four.
In game two, F&M took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first off a two-run shot by Samantha Ginder. R-MC would take the lead in the bottom half of the inning, as Franklin & Marshall would walk in two batters with the bases loaded.
That proved to be enough as the Jackets never looked back. Randolph-Macon would add to its lead in the home half of the fourth when Bauer blasted a two run homer to left center scoring Jarvis. R-MC picked up an insurance run in the next inning when Nanny singled to right field, driving in Michalann Camp who started a two out rally with a double down the right field line.
Franklin & Marshall plated a run in the top of the sixth, but couldn't put together enough hitting to match the Jackets firepower.
Bauer led R-MC at the dish in game two as well, going 2-for-4 with her second homerun of the year. She now leads the squad in batting (.538), hits (14), doubles (6), and RBI (15). Nanny added two hits in the night cap.
Lewis recorded her second victory of the day, tossing a complete game, while allowing just three runs and striking out six. Last week's ODAC Pitcher of the Week improved to 5-0 on the mound this year. Zampino took the loss on the hill for F&M, pitching four innings and giving up five earned runs.
Randolph-Macon returns to action Wednesday, March 7th when the women travel to Shenandoah. Game-time is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m.
