Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va--- Randolph-Macon College battled to earn two extra inning victories over Stevenson Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets took game one by a score of 2-1 in nine innings and picked up the win in the nightcap, 1-0 in eight innings.
R-MC (13-7) tied the all-time series with Stevenson, 4-4 dating back to 2005. The past four games between the two squads have been decided by one run.
Randolph-Macon improved to 8-2 at home on the year.
After a scoreless seven innings in game one, Stevenson (8-12) struck first in eighth inning off a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Ayres.
The Jackets responded, tying the score in the bottom half of the frame when a Kelly Beard RBI double scored Paige Wernig. In the bottom of the ninth, Carolyn Gilbertson grounded out to short to score Sharese Jarvis for the game-winning run.
Beard earned the victory for R-MC, pitching all nine innings. The junior surrendered just five hits and no earned runs, while striking out five to improve to 1-1 on the season. Briana Pichalski took the loss for the Mustangs, falling to 2-5 on the season.
Jarvis led the Jackets at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run.
Game two proved to be an even greater pitcher's duel. With two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the eighth, Beard ripped a single down the left field line driving in Lacey Berry to lead R-MC to the win.
Heather Lewis improved to 8-3 on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout (eight innings) while allowing just three hits and striking out two. Katie Diller was saddled with the loss after pitching a strong 7.2 innings, falling to 6-7 on the year.
Beard led R-MC at the dish, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
R-MC is back in action Sunday, April 1st when they play host to Roanoke College to resume ODAC play. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
