Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Shawn Holmes scored a game-high 27 points to lead No. 15 Catholic to a 67-55 win over Randolph-Macon in men's basketball action on Monday night in the Nation's Capital.
R-MC (3-5) got a double-double from Andre Simon who had a team-high 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Lamar Giggetts and Joe Hassell had 10 points apiece, while Dylan Cole grabbed eight boards to help the Jackets to a 39-24 edge on the glass. Giggetts dished out four assists for R-MC.
Randolph-Macon made 19-of-47 (40.4%) shots from the field, but were just 1-of-7 from three-point land.
Catholic (8-1) got 12 points from Steve Limberiou and nine points from Bryson Fonville. CUA connected on 20-of-48 shots from the field and made 21-of-32 attempts from the free-throw line. The Cardinals forced 21 R-MC turnovers, leading to 21 points.
The first-half featured two ties and seven lead changes. Fonville made the score 23-23 with just over six minutes to play and sparked a 10-4 run to send CUA into the break up 32-27.
The Cardinals scored the first five points of the second stanza to go up 37-27. R-MC battled back to cut its deficit to five when Giggetts made it 42-37 with 12 minutes to play.
CUA would then score the next six points, pushing its lead to 48-37 with just under 11 minutes to go.
R-MC continued to chip away and was able to cut the CUA lead to seven on two different occasions, the second of which came when Cole made a layup with 3:45 left in the game.
That is where Jackets rally would stall as Catholic scored four consecutive points to go back up by 11 and would make all six free-throws down the stretch to ice the win.
Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Salisbury at 7:00 p.m. The Sea Gulls knocked off No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan on Monday evening.
