Box Score ASHLAND, Va--- Saint Mary's (MD) topped Randolph-Macon, 1-0 Monday evening on a late goal by Lisa Sitz. The Yellow Jackets fell to 0-2-0 on the young season, while the Seahawks improved to 2-0-0 on the year.
The two teams met for the first time since 2006, when St. Mary's defeated R-MC, 3-0. The women have now lost their first two games by just one goal each.
The match was evenly played throughout, as both teams registered seven shots in the first half. Erin Hauser gave the host squad their best opportunity of the night when she was denied from the left side of the box midway through the first stanza.
In the second half, the Seahawks began to apply pressure, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 6-2 in the period. Sitz' score came with just over two minutes to play, as she struck from 20 yards out, just over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Briana Housekeeper.
St. Mary's held a 13-9 advantage in shots, including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.
Johanna Rambo paced SMC with three shots on goal on the afternoon. Ashley Stover led R-MC with two shots saved by the keeper.
Kelsey Wirtz picked up her second victory of the season in goal for the visitors, recording seven saves on the day. Brianna Housekeeper recorded eight stops for Randolph-Macon, but fell to 0-2 on the year.
The women return to action Friday, September 9th as they travel to Rocky Mount, North Carolina to participate in the North Carolina Wesleyan Women's Tournament. They will take on Chowan Friday at 3:00 p.m. and the host team, North Carolina Wesleyan Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
